THE MICHIGAN DAILY { S x n v r:'S rr .' "1 +'F m IMPORTANT GAMES ON GRID CARD SATRDA NORTHWESTERN, PURDUE MEET IN YEAR'S BIG GAME FOR BOTH While Chicago and Ohio State are fighting on Stagg field Saturday to de- termine which is to survive in thel Big Ten race, and Iowa meets Min- nesota in a game which the Hawkeyes must take to remain in the running, Purdue and Northwestern clash at La- fayette in the most important game on either team's schedule. Neither the Boilermakers nor the Purple have dis- played a powerful eleven this year and both teams have been used as stepping stones for the stronger Con- 'ference aggregations. Purdue has yet to win its first game of the season although against Iowa 'ast week the Boilermakers made a stand which has caused many dopsters to qnestion the strength of Howard Jones' boys. Like Purdue, Northwestern has not won a Big Ten game this year and has but a single victory over Depauw col- lege to its credit. Northwestern has met with more severe reverses by Big I Ten elevens than Purdue and if the two teams splay according to form the latter should be returned winners. Illinois will take things easy with with Depauw. The Indiana eleven has been going strong but should prove no match for Zuppke's men. Zuppke is planning to scout the Ohio-Chicago game in order to plan his defense for the remainder of his schedule which calls for games with both the Buck- eyes and the Maroons. Wisconsin is taking a rest before the game with Michigan. Richards expects a great fight from the Wol- verines but is also pointing his men i i J ,I jI for the Chicago game on Nov. 19. The forward pass formations are being used extensively by the Cardinal men- tor. Intramural Items Today's soccer schedule. At 3 o'clock, Theta Chi vs. Phi Sigma Delta,! D TED BANKS For the past few days, Banks, star Wolverine quarterback, has been mov- ing about without the aid of a cane. The midget pilot is expected to round into shape rapidly and may be able to appear in the line-up against Wis- consin. In 1894, "Dr." Naegle, janitor of the Medical school, was the only surviv- or left on the campus who had been connected with it at its beginning. With the change in the time, darkness descends' one hour earlier and in order not to los any of the valuable time before the Wisconsin game, artificial light is be- ing furnished by four powerful search- lights and a series of ordinary lamps around the field. Intermission is a Godsend . The two weeks intermission betwee games is proving a godsend to the coaches. With the rest, it is expect- ed that the entire squad will be i perfect physical condition. Member of the hospital list are recovering and by the middle of the week will all b in uniforms. .-Usher has been practic ing all week, as has Kipke. Both have been running about and apparentl are not hampered in the least as a re- sult of their recent injuries. Banks is only member of the cripple clas that is not in uniform. He is about however, without the use of a can but has not yet donned his uniform. Other regulars are in good shape Roby, somewhat the worse for wea after the Illinois game, will be all right to renew his plunging. As yet he has not. been out following last Saturday's game, but his condition i not at all serious. Where Will Cappon Playl It is not likely that there will be4 any radical changes in the line-up within the next week. Undoubtedly the same men will be used as have seen action in the Ohio and Illinois games. Barring further injuries, Kipk will probably begin in the backfield Just where Cappon will play is a mat ter of conjecture. So valuable a uin plunger did he prove himself to be lii he certainly will be called upon carry the ball against Wisconsi Whether he will play in the backfiel all the time or only be called bac from the line when they wish himto carry the ball is the question. - ' Who the other backs will be wilt not be known until late next week. With line plungers such as Cappon, Roby, and Usher, fast end runners a Steketee and Kipke, quarterbacks a Banks and Uterits, and other back as- pirants as Searle, Knode, Dean, Gun ther, and Fairbairn, competition iir back of the line is keen and makes final positions much unsettled. The line problem will not be as great in this respect. At Leland Stanford university, th faculty organized a baseball team and defeated the University'team. This wa back in '95. V 't > ITV MA 'Yj. ..
