BURTON TELLS OF THREE CHOICES1 (Continued from Page One) to represent upon being graduated from the University. "Strengthen the weak point" was the message Presi- dent Burton had on this point and showed that by so doing the life of an individual would not be wasted but would bear its burden in shouldering the responsibilities placed on it by civilization's demands. The third and most serious choice which the President referred to was the choice confronting us when we come face to face with the conflict be- tween the world and its outside influ- ences and our own individuality with its peculiarities, its own traits, and its own capacities. "Be yourself in spite of all conflict- ing forces," was the President's solu- tion to this vital question. "Be in- dependent, have an inner certainty, have fine ideals and identify yourself with them and when the time comes for the answer let it be that 'I will be I.," This was the message and the word of advice on a subject that is always presented to incoming students by their President. Defines Education In concluding his address President Burton attempted to put his finger on the gist of the term education by an humorous analogy, showing that we learn not by being told but by employ- ing active minds in developing the capacities with which we areendowed.
