Irving K. Pond, '7S, of Pond and Pond, achitects of - Chicago, who designed theaUniontand Martha Cook buildings, is somewhat of an acrobat. Here is what a recent issue of the Chicago Daily News has to say of him: Celebrates Birthday Irving K. Pond, Chicago architect, 64 East Van Buren street, Chicago, cele- brated his 65th birthday today by turning a few backward flip-flops that would have done credit to any circus performer. Mr. Pond wasn't really celebrating. Birthdays mean nothing in his life. His performance this morning in the gymnasium of the Central Y. M. C. A. Iwas mere daily routine. Forty-three years ago he made the first and only. touchdown in the University of Mich- igan's first intercollegiate game, play- ed at the White Stockings park on the lake front in. Chicago. He felt so happy on that occasion that he did thirty backward flip-flops down the football field. And he has been doing acro- batics ever since. Quality Desired Now, Today he isn't able to do thirty in a row, it's true. Now he strives for qual-, ity, rather than quantity in acrobatic feats. In th old days Mr. Pond looked upon flip-flops and handsprings as means of expressing his feeling of youthful exuberance. Now he has discovered that acrobatics mean more. "Acrobatics are the poetry of exer- cise," he said. "Games and other forms of athletics are the prose. Exercise is valuable to me not only as a means of Savings Bank tdsprings Aid 70's To Stay Young - keeping fit.. It fits in very nicely with my profession. as an architect. There is an aesthetic pleasure to be gained from a practice of the art of acro- batics. The rhythmic play of relaxa- tion and tension in the nerves and muscles produces a spiritual reaction comparable to creation in other fields of art. S rtW ork Is Fui . "Here, look at this little exercise, just from the viewpoint of fun!" The young old man gave a spring which sent him high in the air with his hands upraised, turned over gracefully and lit neatly on his feet. "This is fun," he said. "That's why I do this stuff. Not simply to keep young. Every morning before I get dressed I go through a few simple ex- ercises. They help to keep me-fit, too. But I don't look upon them as a dis- tasteful duty. I get as much fun stretching as a cat does." PRF WHIPPLE NAMED, ON STATE COMMITTEEa Prof. Gu M. Whipple, of the School of Education, has been appointed a member of a committee to test the in- telligence of the inmates of the various state penal institutions, it was learn- ed yesterday. It is planned to subject all of the state prisoners to the tests, in order to be able to plan the career of each man after his release. The results of the tests will show the type of intel- ligence each prisoner has, and will enable authorities to predict the trade or profession at which he will be most successful. The prisoners, who are often men who have had no opportun- ity to get started in life, will thus be provided with a sort of anchor to hold. to after the completion of their terms, according to the plans of the commit- tee..W 7 A Place to bring your fries Try 06r SPECIAL STRAWBERRY SHORT Cj Nowhere is the food better Nowhere is the service more prompt WANTED Limited number of college men to enter training co in the selling of Dodge Brothers' Motor Vehicle Detroit, during which time we will pay a salary commission.
