To two elevens these struggles will prove to be a fatal stumbling block upon which their hopes will be dashed, while victory to the two con- quering combinations will be hailed as a great stepping-stone towards a much coveted goal, the title. Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Ohio State are the four schools whose gridiron representatives clash in the two feature battles of the West. Each institution has a clean slate in the Conference standings this morning. This afternoon the records of two will be marred. The Indians have journeyed to Iowa City, where they battle with the Hawkeyes, while Co- lumbus will be the scene of the strug- gle between the Buckeyes and the Gophers. Illini Meet Hawkeyes Victory in the Illinois-Iowa game will fall to that team which is most thoroughly drilled and prepared to stop the favorite antics of its oppon ents. Despite their 10 to 7 vctory over Notre Dame last week, the Hawk- eyes proved to be miserably weak in their forward passing offense and de- fense. During the fray Notre Dame completed 13 out of 22 forward pass- es for a net gain of 227 yards, while the Iowans were only able to garner 10 yards in completing but one pass in six attempts. This is their out- standing weakness. On the offense the Jones' contingent is powerful. With a line composed of a goodly number of veterans, and with a back- field disporting such capable "pig- skin toters"as Capt. Aubrey Devine, Locke, and Shuttleworth the aggres- siveness of the Hawkeyes should as- sert itself.. Zuppke's footballers, on the other hand, are not the least bit slovenly in the aggressive style of play, while forward passing is their strong forte. On the defense for straight football the Indians have not shown up so well. Iowa will undoubtedly use a hard, running attack, while Illinois will mix straight tactics with aerial play in an effort to bring victory back to Urbana. The deciding point of the contest will depend upon the ques- tion of preparation. Whether or not the Hawkeyes are better prepared in their defense for the Indians' over- head attack than the Indians are pre- pared to stay the aggressiveness of the Hawkeyes, will tell the tale for the victor. Gophers Play 0. S. U. Minnesota's famous shifts will be much in evidence in the other feature game of the Western Conference. This is Dr. Williams' favorite style of pla'y and the Gophers' chances for victory will largely depend upon its effectiveness. Ohio State has learned its lesson. Last week the Buckeyes, greatly over-confident, fell befors the weak Oberlin eleven by a 7 to 6 score, which, after all, is not a fair indication of their real strength. Dr. Wilce has worked hard with his squad during the past week, and they are cut to minister a defeat to the Goph- ers. The game has incited great in- terest among football enthusiasts and the results will be closely regarded. Northwestern and Wisconsin are two other Conference schools that meet on the gridiron this afternoon. Wisconsin has not been defeated thus far and is not to be overlooked in the race for the title. On the other hand, the Northwestern aggregation is still smarting from three defeats recently inflicted, and are out to re- deem themselves. However, Wiscon- sin, by dint of its showing thus far, having a team composed mostly of veterans, are expected to win without difficulty. Purdue Tackles Notre Dame The other Conference teams to be seen in action are Purdue, whose grid- ders will tackle Notre Dame and fight for a. lost cause, according to. dope- sters, and Michigan, whosmeets the "Aggies in their annual tussle on Fer- ry field this afternoon. Chicago and Indiana have no games scheduled for today. Chicago is busily engaged rpreparing for their big intersectional game with Prince- ton next Saturday, and entertain hopes for a victory. Indiana foot- ballers have rested from their strenu- ous game with Harvard last Satur- day and are now working out a de- fense for the Minnesota shifts in preparation for their contest with the Gophers.
