WASNINUOOM L T~On628 , P R E S S I N G CATHOLIC STUDENTS TO HELP ERECT DORMITORY PLAN CAMPAIGN TO CLEAR UP IN. DEBTEDNESS ON CHAPEL PROPERTY Catholic students at the University of Michigan have promised Rev. Mich- ael P. Bourke, spiritual director of the Students' Chapel at State and Jeffer- son streets, that they will take the first step toward the erection of the new dormitory, that of paying up the present indebtedness on the property. This fund they will raise through a short campaign to be started soon, so that the dormitory project may become a speedy reality. Oicers of the Catholic Students' club will take active charge of the campaign which will necessitate the soliciting of more than 800 Catholic students on the campus for contribu- tions. It is expected that they will raise approximately $8,000, enough to cancel the present indebtedness. Since the present site of the Catholic chapel is no longer included in the University extension program Rev. Bourke is anxious to proceed with the building plans without further un- necessary delay. The dormitory to be erected according to present plans on the rear end of the property at State and Jefferson streets, according to present plans will cost approximately $300,000. The building will serve not only as a dormitory but as a center of Catholic activities at the Univer- sity, in a capacity similar to that of Wesley hall, the Methodist students' headquarters. The seven men that will speak in the contest, which will take place at 8 o'clock to- morrow night in Sarah Caswell Angell hall, are: J. K. Dunn, '24, T. J. {Dona- hue, '23, Frank Ortman, '23, Andrew C. Beam, '23, Melvin Specter, '25, G. Stephen Kaser, '24, and Harry C. Clark, '24. From the field of contest- ants these persons were chosen after giving four minute extemporaneous talks. The topics were assigned five minutes before speaking. Two of the men were selected in the evening try- outs in view of the fact that announce- ment of the tryouts was incorrectly set in the Daily. The winner of the contest tomorrow night will be awarded a silver loving cup. The speeches will be purely ex- temporaneous, the specific topics being assigned at 5 o'clock that afternoon in room -304 Mason hall. EXCAVATIONS MADE BY MICHIGAN MEN Dr. Carl E. Guthe, '14, and Morris K. Jessup, '23E, in charge of tie Car- negie Institution excavation expedi- tion in Guatemala, arrived home last Wednesday after a season's work in the interior. The subject of the investigation was a large earth mound or pyramid about 150 feet long and 90 feet wide at its base. A trench was made across the entire mound thus exposing the meth- od of construction. What is perhaps the most important discovery of the whole expedition was the finding of walls and floors of even earlier build- ing beneath the mound. It had been supposed that the mound dated back to about 1450 A. D., but these remains appear to have been built in the sixth century, and are said to resemble Greek and Roman architecture. The laws of Guatemala do not per- mit the exporting of any antiques so the expedition was forced to record all discoveries by photography. A series of about 500 negatives were taken, showing not only the scientific work but also the environment and conditions under which the work was carried on. Main Street SENIORS AT HARTAO9 A STAIUMFOR GRAUATION EXPERIMENT TRIED SUCCESS- FULLY AT SERVICES IN 1916 To hold Commencement in their. Stadium, Harvard seniors are circulat- ing a" petition among the class of '2 which will be submitted to President Lowell when the required number of names are secured., according to the Harvard Crimson. The matter is then to be turned over to Dr. John War- ren, university marshall, and to the corporation, for decision. The proposition at Harcard has aroused much favorable comment, since the initial experiment was tried in 1916 when the stadium was used for commencement. It is said that the general feeling was that the trial was a success. Harvard faces much the same diffi- culty as Michigan, except in the case here, the problem has become more acute than it originally promised. The first estimate indicated a total senior cltss of little more than 1200, while the latest figures of th combi ned classes of '22 show that the total num- bers of senior is 700. The overflow in Hill auditorium promises to be more than 400 if tickets are issued to each senior.
