THE MICHIGANA DAILY . .. Engineers Hear Explanation Of Cal. Power Plant Emphasizing that it is unnecessary to ruin a waterfall in order to develop water power, Albert A. Northrup of Stone and Webster, Inc., explained the construction of the Caribou plant in California to the members of the En- gineering society Wednesday night in the Natural Science auditorium. William D. -Shannon, '07, was super- intendent of the work. Sixty thousand H. P. Is developed by a fall of water as high as the Woolworth tower, the Metropolitan, and the Singer build- ings stacked on top of each other. Its impulse wheels are the largest of their kind in the world, and are pro- pelled by a 13 inch stream of water traveling 175 miles an hour. Elec- tricity at a potential of 165,000. volts is transmitted on a copper wire an inch in diameter and 200 miles long to supply the city of San Francisco. In order to construct the plant the parts of a locomotive had to be trans- ported over the mountains on pack horses, a reservoir 44 square miles in extent had to be formed, and two tunnel channels constructed through the mountains. The construction and location were graphically shown' by means of mo- tion pictures and colored slides In view of the success of this lec- ture the Engineering society, under whose auspices it was given, expect to have H. A. Coffin here in about two weeks. Mr. Coffin is the chairman of the committee on national defense. He will present his ideas on aerial de- fense of the future. This lecture will be accompanied by motion pictures. Mr. Coffin was, in a very large part, the designer of the Liberty motor.
