Much interest has been shown this year according to Tad Wieman, as- sistant coach and in charge of the spring practice. Never before at Mich- igan has there been as much sustain- ed interest. In previous years many. started out but by the end of the sea- son quite a few had droppedtoff..How- ever this year the number out remained . Beside the growing interest in foot- ball and the desire to be of service to the University which were largely the reasons for this remarkable showing an added stimulus was the tournament which comes off at the end of next week and is a yea-rly affair. Eaeh man will be given a rating on the years work and the showing in this contest will be a large factor in the ating, which is based on three factors; attendance, improvement through the season, and proficiency in the tourna- ment._ Divided Into Two Sections The squad will be divided into two sections, one for backfield men and ends and another for linemen. The linemen will have eleven events .in the tournament, and for proficiency in each the candidate will receive a certain number of points. Tackling at right angles and head on for form counts 15. For versatility and form in' breaking through and the use of the hands, 15 points will ;be given. Ten poftits go to the man most versatile and who has the best form in line blocking. Form in open field. blocking counts ten. Kicking off for distance,. heighth and accuracy, place kicking, dodging, catching punts, picking up fumbles and charging five yards for speed and form will be other events' on the program and several points ranging from 5 to 10 will be awarded in these things.. Award of. Points The s~oand division composed of backs and ends will compete in much1 the same things however, events more. suitable for the backs are incorporated. Tackling, blocking, falling on the ball, punting, place and drop kicking, pass-a ing, and catching punts are part of the competition. Carrying the ball 100. yards against time, starting in all di- rections recovering fumbles, catch- ing punts, dodging, change ,of pace, and twirling are also on the program for the backs. Points are t# be award- I ed for each of these things and the highest possible score would be 100. The tournament will come as a fit-; ting climax to four weeks of hard; work and drill in all the fundamentals of the game. Coach Yost has given much of his time and several veteran players have been down giving the' men pointers on th'e proper way to 4o things. The first week was spent in the absolute fundamentals, tackling, falling on the ball, blocking and the like. No'strenuous work was given until the second week when the can- didates were in a little better condition. Scrimmage was started then and al-+ most daily there was a short game iii which the m.en were able to use the principles being drilled into them.. Good Material Discovered It is the opinion of Coach Wieman that several men were uncovered who will be valuable to the team next fall. The largest gap to fill will be in the center of the line where Ernie Vick, All-American center, Duke Dunn, and Gob Wilson played. These men were all players who rank high in Confer- ence circles and were feared by op- ponents. Coach Yost's hardest ta.sk next fall will be to find men to take these places. Special attention has: been given candidates for guard and: center and there are several men whoI look good for these positions. Slaught-, er, Blahnick, Spencer, Allen, Chamber- lain, Vgn der Voort, Steele and.Rosette deserve mention for the manner in which they have played this spring and from these and Swan, Petro' and a few others the center and two guards will in all probability be chosen. There are several other men who showed up well in the backfield. Hier- holzer, Miller, and Kiefer who al- though will not deplace Kipke, Roby, and Cappon next fall stil have a chance to get on the squad. Gunther who is a demon line plunger is ing up even better than he di fall and will undoubtedly get a c to show his ability in a big gam fall. At end there is another I brother of the famous "Duke," out and he has been working h season. fIits Of Spoari Rtunniing in the face of a win driving rain, Larry Brown, capt the University of Pennsylvania team, today came within one-fifi second of equaling the world's for the 600 yard run, which is 1: made by Sheppard at New' Yc 1910. Sanborn, veteran ball writer, to select the Am league baseball player who pro be of the greatest all around ya his team this season. An awar nature. of which has not bee nounced yet, will be made to the er chosen. "RIDER for PENS.," cade.-Adv. Ni ..e.. w.vwv m ut a 9 , , i Are you interested in a car?
