Craig Ruby to its coaching staff to replace Frank J. Winters as basketball coach, and George Huff, director of athletics, be- lieves that the change will develop a new style of cage play for the Orange and Blue tossers next season. Coach Ruby will have complete charge of both, Varsity and freshman basketball. However, Assistant Coach Burt Ingwerson will coach the yearl- ings, for it is Mr. Huff's idea to start a new system of basketball playing here for the Indian basketeers, and, Ruby was selected to start the ball rolling in that direction. - \ Has Great Record Ruby's past record hg.s been short but sensational. He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1920 as one of the best forwards who ever played in the Missouri Valley confer- ence. Meanwell, wio stepped into the Big Ten Conference circle when he went to Wisconsin. During his first year, Missouri won the Valley title, and this season his team tied for top honors with the University of Kansas quartet. For three years Ruby played under Doc Meanwell's coaching and when his short-pass system was cdntinued at Missouri, it worked for two more titles. The new coach says he will drill the Illini cagers in the short-pass" game, which has made the Missouri team and its two coaches famous. Looks to Success Coming to Illinois at a time when. the Illini will be strongly fortified with basketball players, Coach Ruby is expected to score an immediate success, for he will have the follow- ing veterans. on the squad next year: Swede Hellstrom, Evanston;' Roland3 Popken, Oak Park; G. E. Potter, Or- ange, Calif.; Otto Vogel, Davenport, Ia.: Walter Roettger; L. Stilwell, 01- ney. Besides these men, there are fle real stars on the freshman squad who will bear much watching. - Avoid aelays by ordering your vis- iting cards from O. D. Morrill, 17 Nickel's Arcade.-Adv. CONFERENCE STANDINGS Hawkeyes, turned in a good game against the Illinois team..For six inn- ings he held the Illini powerless be- fore his deceptive slow ball. Witha lead of five runs the Illini came from behind and won in the tenth inning by a score of 6-5. Frohwein's pitching may trouble the heavy hitters of the Michigan team, but it is expected that while Fisher's versatile pitching staff is holding the enemy at bay, Michigan can amass enough hits to put the con- test aw ay for their fourth straight win. It is rather doubtful as to whom Coach Fisher will send to the mound. The Notre Dame contest on Friday, while not counted in the Conference standing, is a feather in the cap of any team that can defeat the Catho- lics, who usually turn out good ball teams. Any one of the three main- stays of the squad, Dixon, Liverance or Schultz should be able to turn in a wi'n if called upon. It is interesting to note that in the three-Conference games that Michigan has played this season, the nine has played 'excellent ball. The pitching has been of high grade. Dixon has turned in two games with few hits, while almost perfect control mnarked his work. Liverance, who was as- signed the task of subduing the Ma- roons, last Friday at Chicago, allow ed but two hits and should have been given a shut out save for some costly boots by his team mates.
