ing. Liverance showed vast improve-
ment over last year when he set Chi-
cago down with a stingy pair of
scratch hits, while Dixon was master
of the situation at all times against
Wisconsin. Milton held the Badgers
to a single hit, made over first base'
until the start of the ninth when the
Cardinal batters added :three more
singles to their total and scored their
only two runs of the game. Dixon
looked even better than hle did against
Illinois, for he had perfect control
and did not give a base on balls to a
single Wisconsin batter.
Knode Leads Team
Knode with 7 hits for a total of
15 bases took the batting honors on
the trip. Bob handled his chances in
the field perfectly in addition to wield-
ing the stick-for the highest batting
average. Shorty Wimbles played a
sparkling game on the keystone sack
and contributed 2 timely hits for extra
bases in the Badger contest. Uteritz
played hisrusual steady game at short
stop and ran up one. of the best hit-
ting averages. Utz made three hits
against the Maroon pitchers, while at'
Wisconsin he was only credited with
two trips to the plate, and in one of
these trips he contributed a two base'
hit. Mike Paper continued to play a

In disposing of Wisconsin the Wol-
verines secured undisputed posses-
sion of first place in the Big Ten flag

test to Fisher's men the illini have
scored victories over Iowa and Ohio

sota previous to its game with 1Michi-
gan. Illinois plays two games this
week, Chicago on Thursday and Wis-
consin at Madison on Saturday. The.

should aetermine definitely which of
the two nines is to be the chief rival
of Fisher's men in the race. On paper
the Illini look better, although the
Cardinal nine is one that is dangerous
at all times and will cause Lund-
gren's men difficulty if the Badger
pitchers are able to hold the Urbana
hitters. _

Hardy hitting by the Michigan base-
ball team resulting in victories over
Chicago and Wisconsin last week end
caused the Wolverines to replace the
Badgers at the top of the Conference
with three wins and no defeats to
their credit.
That the Wolverines hit the ball
hard is evidenced by the fact that Cap-
tamn Paddock of Wisconsin, last year
one of the most effective of Confer-'
ence twirlers, was driven to the
showers in the Saturday game by a
fusilade of extra base hits. Christen-
sen who replaced the' Badger captain
on the mound faired little better and
the Michigan team won by a 9-2

In the Friday game the Michigan

Gophers Defeat Northwestern
Minnesota won a wierd game from
Northwestern Saturday by a score of
16-8. The Gophers handicapped by a
late spring with plenty of cqld weath-
er and rain seem to have hit their
stride. They can hardly be expected
to turn out the brand of baseball that
the teams trained in the South play
but with hot weather can be counted
on to win' the majority of contests
they engage in this season.
Purdue took Iowa into camp to a
tune of 5-1 over the week end. After
the brilliant showing the Hawkeyes
made against- Illinois recently, forcing
the game into extra innings and losing
by'a lone marker, the showing against
the Hoosiers is rather disappointing.
This relegates the Iowa team to the
