Call Potter, 1391. 145-4 To establish polo as a regular sport of the ,University is the plan of Lieut. John N. Ryan, a newly established riding instructor at G. L. Mullison's. He plans to form a club of those who would care to play and to set up polo on the same level as the Boxing club. The University offers ideal facili- ties for the formation of such a club according to Lieutenant Ryan. Not only are there a great number of stu- dents who would be interested in ;the sport, but the athletic clubs in De- troit and throughout the section sup- port teams who could be engaged in competition. Not an Expensive Game The general 'belief that polo is a very expensive game and to be play- ed only by millionaires is entirely false, Lieutenant Ryan state. The outdoor game which would be im- practicable at Michigan as it can be engaged in only during the summer months, and which require more ex- pensive horses and the upkeep of a large field has given it this reputa- tion. With the indoor game, which is used by all of the teams in this section, the ring used. has practically no upkeep cost, the shorter periods of play and the slightly slower game permits one horse to bb used through the entire:; game, and the horses themselves are slightly less expen- sive. But three men play in the in- door game, thus making the number of horses necessary one less. Condition Suitable In the matter of a ring suitable forl use for indoor polo, Michigan is again ideally suited. Weinberg's coliseum, which can be'procured, offers the best possible type of ring. With but slight alteration it would furnish an excep- tionally fist ring with a large seat- ing capacity. Iieutenant Ryan pointed out that the expenses of such an undertaking would have to be borne by the club' formed until actual play could be started. The gate receipts of polo, howevep, are always high once they are started.' "I -know positively that the gate receipts from one game of polo a week would more than meet all expenses," he stated. " To BegnThis Spring It is Lieutenant Ryan's purpose to get those men. who would be inter- ested in polo playing together this spring and to start them on actual work in riding, polo carriage, and some mallet work. In the fall he in- tends to organize the club and form the teams. All students who are in- terested are requested to get in touch with Lieutenant Ryan as soon as possible.
