Planned to Take Place This
Fall
Eddie V. Rickenbacher, famous ace
and speed king, will speak at 7:30
o'clock next Wednesday night in the
Union at the opening smoker of the
Engineering society. The smoker will
be a get-together affair and will be
free for all members of the Engineer-
ing .society. For. all other engineers
a fee of 50 cents will be charged.
Prominent Auto Racer
Rickenbacher came into prominence
in 1911 as a daring automobile driver.
In 1914 he won the 300 mile speed-
way race at Omaha, and established
a track record there for the distance.
For the next two years he continued
his sensational driving and at the
close of the racing season was third,
following Resta and Aitkea in the
points of score winnings of the year.
It was Rickenbacher's claim that the
American racing chauffeus would make
excellent airmen and he was one of
the first to demonstrate the truth of
his assertion after the United States
had declared war. He enlisted in the
United States army early in 1917 and
was among the first Americans sent
overseas. For sometime he acted as
chauffeur to General Pershing but lat-
er obtained a commission in the avia-

APPOINTED ENVOY
TO JAPANESE
Charles Beecher Warren, '91, of'
Detroit, has been appointed United
States ambassador to Japan by Presi-
dent Harding. Mr. Warren is a law-
yer. After obtaining his Ph.B. degree
at the University, he studied at the
Detroit College of Law for his LL.B.
In 1916 he received the honorary de-
gree of A.M.
He was associate counsel for the
United States government before the
joint high commission to determine
the Behring sea claims in 1896, and
counsel for the government in the
North Atlantic coast fisheries arbitra-
;tion case before the Hague tribunal
in 1910. Mr. Warren was awarded the
D.S.C. medal for exceptional service
during the war. He entered the serv-
ice as major in the reserve corps and
judge advocate in the adjutant-gener-
al's department, later being promoted
to the rank of colonel.

The first exchange of professors be-
tween the Philippine Islands and the
United tSates will be effected if Max-
imo Kalaw, dean* of the college of lib-
eral arts of the University of the Phil-I
ippines, accepts the offer of the Uni-
versity of Michigan to exchange with
Prof. Joseph Ralston Hayden of the
political science department.
Professor Kalaw is the youngest
dean of a higher educational institu-
tion under the United States flag, be-
ing but 28 years old. He is the au-
thor of several books on the Phil-
ippine problem. It is expected that
he will accept the offer.

Cited for Bravery
He was cited for bravery by the
French government and awarded an
insignia of the French Legion of Hon-
or in September, 1918, for his daring
and masterful fighting over the Chat-
eau Thierry sector. Early in October
of that year he downed two enemy
planes within five minutes of each
other, making his total of nine indi-
vidual victories. Since the war Rick-
enbacher has been the head of the
Rickenbacher Motor Car company in
Detroit, and is with them at the pres-
ent time.
Dean Cooley to Speak
Dean Mortimer E. Cooley will the
other speaker and his address will
be to the incoming freshmen. Music
will be furnished by the D. F. Dee-
bach orchestra and the Camp Davis
quartette. The Engineering society is
planning many lectures and social
events this ,ail. On Oct. 10 there will
be an illustrated lecture on the "Car-
ibou Hydro-Electric Power Plant in
the Sierra Nevada Mountains." A
dance is also planned for the latter
part of October.
