a sample must feel that any society
of which this is a real photograph
contains the seeds of its own dissolu-
tion.
"In spite of their noisy reveberation
in the press, the friendly British stu-
dent of America, cannot accept these
books as really or permanently char-
acteristic. It cannot be that the °na-
tional vein has been exhausted, that
a literature of inherent. Americanism
is no longer possible. We do not in-
sist on Buffalo-Billism 'in pen and
ink; but are we wrong in hoping for
something that will suggest America
first and not France, something that
seems to have sprung naturally from
the soil, something that, however cul-
tured or cultivated, is yet not exotic?
And are we wrong it failing to see,
how this can be produced by the de-
liberate depreciation of practically all
antecedent American work?
"This is carrying the avoidance of
patriotic shortsightedness too far. I,
for one, believe that America is strong
C enough to stand alone, and that there
is no reason to doubt that her liter-
ature, her spontaneous literature, will
somehow hold its own in any com-
pany." .GAlumnus.
Seniors Fav'horl
Revival Of Old
During the past few years the mem-
bers of the senior classes have been
discarding the tradition of carrying
canes during the last part of their
senior year. This year very little
attention is being paid to the custom,
as evidenced by the fact that up to
this time Wagner and Company, the
official dealers, have sold very few
canes.
The lack of interest in this tra-
dition during the past few years is de-
clared by several prominent men on
the campus as being but a further
manifestation of the same spirit'
which is resulting in the decline of
most of the oldest Michigan's tradi-
tions.
Owen Watt, '22, president of the
senior law class, declared himself to
be heartily in favor of the movement:
to restore the custom. Walter B.
Rea, '22, president of the senior lit
class and captain of the 1922 basket-
ball; team, expressed his approval of
the tradition and stated that seniors
ought to purchase canes if for no
other purpose than as keepsakes.
James G. Frey, '22, managing editor
of the Michiganensian, Maynard New-
ton, '22, and others expressed their
endorsement of the plan.
LOCAL COAL MEN
NOW INSOLVENT
Following the appeal of the C,. H.
and Wm. S. Heck Coal company for
receivership in circuit court ,last'
week, Carl M. Struhberg was ap-
pointed as receiver of the partnership.'
According to reports the assets of the
company amount to less than $8,000,
while the liabilities will total $42,000
Or more.
Several fraternities and sororities
whose notes for undelivered coal
have been negotiated at the bank will
suffer losses of between $200 and
$1,000 because of the failure.
Responsibility for the falure is laid
to the fact that Wm. S. Heck, the
managing partner of the firm, has
been unable to manage the business
since he accidentally shot himself
early in February. He is now seri-;
ously ill with pleurisy and pneumonia
and is not expected to live.
