Pontius uist Lillian Scher R. B. Tarr Virginia Tryon Dorothy Whipple TAFF 960 ...VERNON F. HILLERY reports have taken lately to a new fad - cigarette puffing. The silken face veil, that has so long be- tokened modesty and innocence, has been removed so that the wearer may now the more securely and more daintily hold the perfumed cork-tips. And surely, as an advertising scheme which contributes to the progress of the world expert stenographers, manicurists, and university women students, no better medium than smoke-puffing could have been invented. This new fad at least is bound to pro- duce results. Soon we may expect to see billboards bearing such flaring announcements as, "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Holds a Camel," 'I'd Dance a Week for a Fatima," "English Ovals Make the Lips More Ellipticable," and "The Road to Social Success Is Paved with Melachrinos." In fact, ru- mor has it that a new book containing rules of eti- quetteis now being published. It declares, among other things, that no woman shall enter a ball room or dining room without a sufficient number of ci- garettes in a silver case to supply every one of her dance partners and escorts, and for hostesses the book stipulates that in place of finger bowls ash .trays should be served." On page 722 (it is a stu- pendous volume) the following is found: 'It is considered very correct to wear engraved match boxes attached to chains of gold, instead of lockets or charms." It has also, been rumored in the circles of thqse whose names frequent the society columns of the Sunday newspapers that some new sorority pledge rules include one commandment that "no pledge may be admitted to the ranks of full mem- bership until she has passed through a probationary period in cigarette smoking and 'rolling her own, after which time she shall be examined as to her ability in flicking ashes gracefully, various carrying poses, and inhaling." Some say that the millenium will not come for many thousands' of years, while others are of the opinion that it may arrive at any time, perhaps to, morrow. If it should come any time within the next few weeks, or before this new fad has given way to another, it may aid Milady of the Cigarette to ascend to heavenly heights on clouds of Turkish smoke. TENNIS COURTS NEEDED Now that the time ad weather seem to indicate that white flannels and tennis racquets will soon be the order of the day, it may be an opportune mo- ment o make mention once again of the fact that more tennis courts are needed on Fery field. The present number is in no way sufficient to accommo- date all the students who follow the game. What will the situation be when tennis time rolls 'round again this spring? Is the tennis player to be compelled time after time, as in the past, to wait for a court on which to play, only to find those at last available to be half-lined, over-run with weeds pear the backstops, and fitted out with dilapidated nets? Or is he to find good, well equipped and well kept courts, of sufficient number to fill the needs of would-be players, when he goes to Ferry field? Athletic officials, will Ferry field see the installa- tion and fr.aintenance of any better tennis equip- ment this spring? Seventeen Michigan men at Urbana tonight will do their utmost to uphold our athletic standing in the annual Illinois relay carnival. Here's hoping!
