PEARE, Chairman Cap and Gown Com- mittee. With the opening of the second se- mester, the freshman track squad has made a new spurt. Many of the mem- bers have shown marked improve- ment. Archie Hahn has not lost any men through ineligibility; because freshman track is, taken as the equiv- alent to gym work. Hubbard, the broad jumper from Walnut Hills High school, Cincinnati, was credited with a remarkable leap of 24 feet on liis first try. His other jumps were all over 23 feet. Al- though these jumps were measured from the place where he left the floor, as there are no take-off boards in- doors, this advantage is offset by the cisadvantages of the indoor runway and pit. No doubt this marked im- provemefit in Hubbard's jumping is due to the fact that he hai learned to (e 11 I 214 F-t Advertisers.-Adv. Lost something? It is interesting to note that Carl Johnson holds the Con- ference record in this event with a. Jump of 24 feet and one .inch. Archie Hahn awarded tickets to the Chicago and Michigan meet to over a hundred of the squad. He says thai most of the men are developing and before sumer many good records will be matde. The sprints are the yearlings' strongest events. Hubbard and Witt- man are showing .up well. Neville, Steger, Jones, and Clark are also good sprint men. In the mile Isbell has proved him- self the best, having done it in 4:38. Heaphy does this run in under 5. The other milers are Cochran and Nichol- son. The quarter mile is handled by Gow- en, Marsh, Richey, and Jones. They are working hard and good results are expected from them. Renke, Gibson and Spedding are do- ing well in the half, as are Zinn and Penke. In the high hurdles, Hubbard has so far proved himself the best. Barth is also doing creditable woik. In the low there, are Lawrence, Haughland and Aldrich. The two mile , is taken care of by Isbell and Anstutz. While Prosser and Brooker are doing well in 'the pole vault. Prosser, Brooker, and J Gunn are god high jumpers. ). 3 t 1 ' ;, ' 'J mhSecond pla4 BIG TEN CHlAMPIONSHlIP the Big Ten attention. The Maroons, then under the tutelage of Pat Page led the race and were not scheduled to .match their skill with'Purdue with the result that Chicago took the Big Ten title by a margin of half a gane, although most1 critics agreed that Purdue was prob- ably superior to the Maroons in strength. . In a postseason game for the national championship betweenY Chicago and Pennsylvania, the Mid- way team lost by the narrowest mar-3 gin when the deciding game was play- ed on a neutral floor at Princeton. ItI was the opinion of many western fol- lowers of the game that the Purdue team.could have conquered the Quak- .ers. Last year Purdue was joint hold- er of the title along with Michigan and Wisconsin. Without distracting from the credit of the Boilermaker's achievement it may be said that this year Purdue has been favored with a comparatively soft schedule, as they did not meet Wisconsin, Minnesota or Michigan.r Theonlyreally hard encounter play- ed by the Old Gold and Black was thef one they dropped to Illinois by a. sin- gle point margin.
