Every night a bunch of men turn out at Ferry field. They are the Scrubs, the "backbone of the team," practicing day after day that, through playing them, the Varsity may become a better team. Coming down day after day, knowing they will never play in a real game nor be recognized other than as material for the team to fight against. Occasionally, of course, a man is taken from the scrubs and told to re- port on the Varsity squad thereafter. His playing has pleased the coach, and every scrub is always praying that perhaps his turn may be next. John Henry was the last man picked by Yost.. At the end of the season a sweater is their reward, emblazoned with an "R." Why an "R?" Perhaps 'signifying for "Reward for Roughly Rolling the Rios- terous Ruffainly Regulars 'Round on the Raw 'Rth." Or is it really "Re- serves?" At any rate it doesn't bear any sign that it has been Michigan at which it was earned. This week the Scrubs had their firs scrimmage this year. The Varsity second string, on which Roby, Knode, Smith, and Fairbairn were playing, fought against them for 25 minutes without making a touchdown. Then Eddie Usher and Uteritz were put in, and the former scored. Morey, quart- erback, was the shining light for the scrubs, bringing Usher down twice aft- er he had broken through the line. Tuesday night another game was played, but this time the second string men proved too much for the scrubs, and beat them 19-0. VARSITY GOLFERS TO OPPOSE O.S.U. Up to date there are 22 members of the student body who have taken ad- vantage of the opportunity to become members of the Ann Arbor Golf club. As the number who can join will be limited to 30, it is imperative that those who consider belonging, do so immediately. Accbrding to Professor Tueblood, tryouts for the Varsity golf team will be held in the near future and those selected will have the honor of oppos- ing Ohio State on the morning of the football game. At the same time plans are under consideration to change the date-of the Conference golf meet from some time in October to an early date in the spring, it being thought that conditions at that time will be more favorable.
