" r r .rr rws r r .. r rlr rMYq 1 w Communication Editor', The Michigan Daily: "Where there's smoke, there's fire," runs the old adage. It still holds true today. There can be no denying that critic- ism of the lit school has been vitrolic and continuous. Were this fault-find- ing the outburst of a. disappointed freshman or of even a small body of students, it might be suspected that the remarks were, prompted by feel- ings of prejudice. but where the comn- plaints have been as specific, as in-I sistant, as general, and as bitter as they have been with regard to certain phases of the College Hof Literature, Science, and the Arts, there must be some foundation for dissatisfaction. Surely the failure of over one-fifth of the total enrollment of the entire. college in a single semester proves that something is radically wrong. Where a teaching staff is so incapable that it is unable to fulfill its sole and only duty to more than 1,000 stu- dents, there is something wrong some,~ where. In justice to those instructors who have, and are, so honestly, whole- souledly, and faithfully trying to co- operate and help the students it is only fair that the real condition of the school be carefully examined. If there is _dry-rot, let it be got rid of. The patient is better after the operation. It is only those with a guilty conscience who try to hamper honest investigation.
