He was one of Qie twelve appointed by the faculty to* represent the class at commencement as speakers, and one of six seniors elected by the students at large to edit 'The University Magazine.'"~ For two years after his graduation he served as professor of Greek in Alliance college, Ohio. Then followed his appointment to the chair of an- cient languages in Hiram college, but in 1871!lhe gave up this position to return to Ann Arbor as instructor in mathematics. One year later, however, he resigned; his position to b~ecomne principal 01f the Ann Arbor high school, but in 1876 he was recalled to the University as assistant professor of rhetoric and history. By a series of subsequent steps, he reached, five years later, the position of professor of Enhglish and rhetoric, and when the chair was di- vided in 1003 he chose the professor- ship of English, which position he held until his retirement. On Library Commiittee in 1880 Professor Demmon was made a member of the library com- mittee of the faculty and devoted much time to bibliographical studies and to the development of various University collections, notable among which are the dramatic collection and the McMillan Shakespeare library.
