Charles David Williams, Epis- copal bishop of Michigan, will speak at 7:30 o'clock this evening on "Re- cent Impressions of England," before the Good Fellowship club at Harris hall. He will give an account of his visit to that country last summer, where he attended the Lambeth con- ference. His talk promises to add greatly to the entertainment of the evening. Bishop Williams has been bishop of this state since 1906. Before that time he served in the different offices of deacon, priest, rector, and dean. He has held the rectorships of Fernbank and Riverside, Ohio, and also that of St. Paul's at Steubenville, Ohio. In 1893 he became dean of Trinity Cathe- dral at Cleveland, which position he held until 1906, when he was made bishop. Besides being the author of "A Valid Christianity for Today," Bishop Wil- liams served two terms as president of the Cleveland library board. By the students of Michigan and other uni- versities, he. is considered an author- ity on social questions. At St. Andrew's church tomorrow morning, the- bishop will administer confirmation, and preach on "The Gospel in a Day of Disillusionment." CHAPMAN JEWELER AND OPTOMETRIST The Store of Reliability & Satisfaction 113 South Main Street ANN ARBOR, - * MICHIGAN CONTROL OF FORESTS HANDS OF STATE MAKERS LEFT LAW r "The Snell bill quoted in yesterday's' Daily, and favored by Colonel Gree- ley, is backed by lumber interests for the purpose of blocking necessary leg- islation," according to Prof. LJ. Young, of the forestry department. "The bill directs authorities 'to rec-e oinend legislation'-right there in the word 'recommend' is the joker. Since it gives no authority to enforce the 'recommendations' it leaves our for- est policy as it has been, in the hands of the states. In the leading timber. producing states, Washington, Ore- gon, California, Montana, and Idaho, the lumber interests are powerful enough to prevent action which would stop the present waste caused by un- scientific methods. "Leaders in most ' business are lookingtoward the future; but the money end of the forestry industry is handled by a lot of cheap lawyers.. They don't seem to care whether our foreists last or not. Before manO years the timber question will be among the hottest issues in the coun- try. Grain may be scarce one year and plentiful the next; but a timber famine will last a generation. - - - ..
