£t £La iv*& .na £A.W A I.u'.A. z __________________________ I fib TEN TEAMS FINI SH INTIE (Continued from Page One) ; The two defeats handed Illinois by Mihigan, and Chicago's sudden re- versal of form, by which the Orange and Blue was defeated 29 to 26, were the only things that kept Coach Win- ters' five from Conference honors. At midseason the Urbana team looked to be a certain bet for first place, but Michigan, Chicago, and Purdue ad- ministered, defeats, and Illinois closed the season in fourth position, with seve games won and five lost. Purdue Uncertain Purdue experienced an up and down season, flirting with first place all winter, and going there only after the last game had been snatched from Iowa. Purdue was conceded to have one of the most powerful teams in the race, but later events have not borne this out, for, since the defeat register- ed by Michigan, Purdue has been hanging in the first division more by good fortune than by good playing. The reversal of form that enabled the Boilermakers to win, 29 to 19, from Illinois at Urbana was one of the sur- prises of the year. Iowa and Minnesota proved in-and- outers, teams that would, win one day, and be outclassed the next. Iowa got .a late start, but proceeded to mix up Conference results by winning from Indiana and Puidue. Minnesota won from Wisconsin in the first game between the two quintets, the second contest going to theBadgers. Iowa still has one more game to play, with Northwestern, and will probably go into a tie with Indiana and Minnesota, as the Purple will be extremely fortunate to win from the Hawkeyes. Chicago, 1920 title winners, fell in- to evil ways and finished in seventh position. The Maroons opened the seasoin favorites' for the title, and seemed invincible, defeating Wiscon- sin and Iowa, but lost to Illinois and Michigan. The last minute rally that defeated the Viiversity , of Illinois showed that there was real power in the Maroon machine. Birkhoff, Chi- cago forward, was the highest indi- vidaul scorer of the season. Unexpected Reverses Ohio State and Northwestern prov- ed to be the chopping-blocks of the year. Northwestern started well by gaining a one pbint verdict over Wis- consin, but failed to dome through in any of the succeeding games. Ohio State, defeating Michigan 22 to 10 at Ann Arbor, was later defeated by the Wolverines in Columbus 36 to 22. The Ohio team had power but failed to make the most of opportunities. The entire season was featured by unexpected reverses, handed by the tail-enders to the leaders, and by the many well balanced teams that make the selection of any one champion al- most impossible. The score was tied at 26 all at the end of the regular playing time and an overtime 'period of five minutes was necessary to de- cide the game. The upper laws defeated the lower laws 29 to 5, holding their opponents safe at all times and scoring at will. The fresh engineers beat the upper dents 13 to 7 in a loosely played match in which Piggot of the winners did the bulk of the scoring for his team, counting five field goals. Junior engineers were too strong for Merner's fresh lits and took the long end of a 22 to 11 score. Tracy and Kipke did some excellent guarding for the losers.
