KARLMALCOLM LIBERTY STREET AT MAYNARD OEIN cooLEY SPONSORSI NEW PROMOTION SYSTEM, COMMITTEE CHOSEN TO COLLECT DATA ON ENGINEERING FACULTY Dean M. E. Cooley has appointed a committee to get information for pro- jmotions and salary increases in the engineering school, by the same sys- tem as that used for rating officers ins the army, according to Prof. A. H.3 White, chairman of the committee. This system of rating covers every phase of a man's usefulness to the University; including teaching ability, personality, special training, research and outside relations. Last year a tentative test was given for the first time, of an experimental nature. As a resul of the first tests, several chang's were incorporated this year' at the suggestion of Prof. J. F. Shep- aid, of 1he psychology department, who acts as the technical advisor of the committee. In gathering data the committee submit.ted a list to each faculty man of the engineering college, requesting him to check names of persons with whom he was acquainted. It is the intention of the committee to submit to every man a series of general ques- tions on the ability of other faculty men on whom they are in a position to be posted. According t, Prof. A. H. White, a personal iography will also be sub- mitted to Dean Cooley 1y each man. "By an intelligent comparison of the two sources of information, promo- tions and salary increases. can be recommended with greater fairness,,, was Prof. White's opinion. RESOLUTION The Board of"'Trustees of the Student Christian Asso- ciation at a recent meeting passed the following statement in appreciation of the work of Miss Eva Lemert, Executive Sec- retary at Newberry Hall:- "In accepting your resignation as Executive Secretary of the Women's Department of the Students' Christian Associa- tion, the Board of Trustees desires to express its deep regret that such action is necessary. During the five years that you have been associated with the young women of the University of Michigan, you have con- stantly displayed superior ability as an organizer and leader. Your unselfishness and your intense devotion to your work have won for you many warm -friends, who, you may be as- sured, are fully cognizant of the difficulties under which you labored and know how to properly evaluate the excellent re- sults you accomplished. Although your official connection with the religious activities of the young women of this Uni- versity will soon terminate, your splendid Christian spirit and, example will long endure in the lives of Michigan women. By conducting your work upon sympathetic and broad Christian lines you have laid strongfoundalons for the future develop- ment and progress of the Women's Department. Our sense of loss is lessened only by the realization that your splendid ability and mature experience will find larger opportunities for directing the progressive religious thought of the mor- row."
