D. Kirby, chief deputy labor commissioner. Mr. Kirby expressed the belief that condi- tions would show an improvement dur- ing January, due to resumption of pro- duction by many large plants in the state, although official figures are not yet available. During December employers made but 1,561 applications against 2,129 in November. The number of men em- ployes sought by employers in Decem- ber was 1,754, against 2,751 in Novem- ber. The number of women asked for in December was 641, against 678 in. November. The number of persons applying for work in December showed decided gains over the November figures. The December figures were: Men applying for work, 15,741; wo- men applying for work, 1,197; men re- ferred to positions, 1,821; women re- ferred to positions, 514; positions filled by men, 1,724; positions filled by wo- men, 479. The November, figures were: Men applying for positions, 10,514; women applying for positions, 1,098; men re- ferred to positions, 2,546; women re- ferred topositions,538; positions filled by men, 2,350; positions filled by wo- men, 468. PROF. YOUNG APPOINTED TO ACT ON STATE FOREST COMMITTEE Prof. L. J. Young, of the forestry department, is one of a committee of five, appointed by the Michigan State Farm bureau to propose new legisla- tion to the incoming House of Repre- sentatives concerning state forests. The other members of the committee are made up of a professor of forestry from Michigan Agricultural college, a federal official, and two state officers. These men will formulate plans that will enable the farmer to dispose of his logs fn small quantities at a fair price. They will also formulate new forest fire laws because the present ones are inadequate.
