The devastated region covers an area of 125,000 square miles in the pro- vinces of Shantung, Shansi, Shensi and Honan. Thousands of refugees in the city of Chengchow are living under bridges and under porches of stores or on the streets. They have no place. to beg and no land to go to. Most of them are already half-starved. So many starving people have thrown themselves into the White River, which furnishes the water sup- ply of the city of Tientsin, that the river gives off a disagreeable odor, and use of the water- from it for drinking purposes has been abandon- ed.
