An average of 50 persons are making application to take examina- tions each day, Mr. Myers said. A few months ago many days passed without a single applicant. During the period preceding Christ- mas a year ago postof lice authorities were unable to obtain sufficient help to handle the mails here and were obliged to wait until various colleges and schools in the state closed to ob- tain extra help. This year 8,000 persons applied for extra work during the holidays. Only about 500 of these could be given work.
