He was placed on parole about a year and a half ago. With the completion of the sewer system in a few days, Hill street will be ready for paving from State street to Lincoln. The paving will probably be done in the spring. Dan Stockdale, 32, of Ypsilanti, was brought in yesterday and held for ex- amination January 13 on charge as assault. PRELiMINARY TRYOUTS FOR CONTEST TO BE SATURDAY The preliminary tryouts for the Ora- torical association's extemporaneous speaking contest will be held Satur- day afternoon, Jan. 15. There are 25 students who will speak at this time. Of that number 10 will be chosen to take part in the final contest, Jan. 18. No speeches will be permitted "on the four main topics. A large list of subjects is to be posted in room 304, Mason hall, the morning of the tryout. Each speaker will be expected to give a seven-minute speech on one of these. OFFICER TRACK CAPTAIN AT IOWA An article in the University of Iowa News Letter states that Lester Dyke, captain of the Iowa track squad, has dropped competition in basketball that he may participate in track. This was done in accordance with a ruling of the faculty of the college of medicine. Dyke will be remembered here as the commander of Company 16, S. A. T. C., in the fall of 1918.
