On Nov. 1 prices were 33 per cent be- low those prevailing at planting time, the secretary of agriculture said, adding: "There is perhaps no single solution for the situationtwhich the farmers are now facing, but there are many steps which can and should be taken to place our agriculture on a more satisfactory basis and to stabilize the business of farming, not in the inter- est of the farmers alone but in the in- terest of the nation as a whole. A sober national thought with regard to the importance, the absolute necessity, of a sustained agriculture in this coun- try is imperative." Solutions Offered PROGIDAL FREIGHT BACK TO HOME CARS GO RAILROADS Detroit, Dec. 10.-Freight cars that developed the "wanderlust" during the period of federal control gradually are returning to their home roads, accord- ing to a statement by one of the rail- roads centering here. During November, 1919, an average of 25,850 cars were on this railroad's lines, against 19,000 in November, this year. On Nov. 1, this year, there were 14,789 cars belonging to other roads on the railroad's lines, while on Nov. 25 the number had been reduced 678, showing, according to railroad offi- cials, that the homeward movement continues. The number of cars belonging to the railroad that are reported on its own lines is showing an increase each week. Out of 729 cars returned to the 'road from other lines 323 were in such condition that it was necessary to send them to the slops for general over- hauling. w Athletic Equipment For Every Indoor And Outdoor Sport Catalocueao renuest A. The"question of farm and personal credit tnust be given more favorable consideration, the secretary declared, and ways be found to aidj tenant farmers or men just embarkingF In the business of agriculture to es- tablish themselves.t "The road between the producer and the consumer should be kept open and made shorter," the report said, to in- sure fair prices and that the consumer will be able to buy with only "reason-. able" profits attached' to ,the original selling price. Cooperative marketing undoubtedly affords an opportunity to shorten the channel between producer and consumer, -the secretary said, as well as opportunity to reduce the cost of production by use of governmental information, as to marketing, grading. etc. Farmers Do Part The farmers of America"have again Justified the faith of the nation to meet its requirements," Mr. Meredith de- clared, and have produced crops esti- mated to be worth $13,300,000,000 this year. The combined yield of the prin- cipal crops was 13 per cent above the average for five years. The corn crop of 3,199,000,000 bushels is unprecedented, represent- ing about four-fifths of the world's production, the report said. The sweet potato crop of 106,000,000 bushels is far in excess of any other year except 1919, while the rice crop of 52,000,000 bushels, is one-fourth greater than the largest crop ever before harvested. Tobacco production of 1,476,000,000 pounds, the sugar beet crop of 149,- 000,000 bushels, and the potato crop of 421,000,000 bushels stand out as high marks, while the apple produc- tion of 236,000,000 bushels, has been exceeded only once. Parking Rules Now Enforced Parking rules are being stringently enforced. Last night, contrary to re- peated warnings from the Ann Arbor police department, a car was parked directly in front of the Arcade theatre. The owner on leaving the show found that his car was gone. However the matter was cleared up when it was found that the police had quietly re- moved it for reasons all of their own. Accidents to School Children Decrease E Detroit, Dec. 10.-Due, it is believed,, to the addition of a study of accident: prevention to the Detroit public school curricuhm, the number of accidents to school children here in October showed a marked decrease over the figures for the same month in 1919. The number of fatal-accidents in- creased but those of other classes showed a decline sufficient to cut the average for the month. Fatal acci- dents in October, 1919, numbered threei against nine -this year. Serious accidents during the month in 1919 numbered-11 and nine this year. Minor accidents this year to- talled 43, against 6? in October, 1919 A large proportion of the accidents were those in which children were struck by automobiles. Water Waves? Full Line of E.
