G. Can- field. The table, which will consist of perhaps 500 French words, is the first of its kind ever attempted and is being formulated with the aid of French students in the University who expect to teach. The table will ascertain in a thor- ough and systematic way what is the most useful vocabulary for the stu- dent of French. It will consist of words occurring in all sorts of read- ing, making the latter much easier. w ILL AID STUDENTS OF THAT LANGUAGE IN LEARNING VOCABULARY text most frequently used in element- ary French reading were examined and the frequency of the use of words established. Later, different kinds of text books were examined and similar tables of frequency established. After the perusal of five or six more texts a comparison will be made and a com- mon and useful vocabulary formed. Useful to French Students "French textbooks," said Professor Confield, "do not give a useful vocabu- lary. They give perhaps 70 useful words, and the remainder are transi- tory. "Of the 25 books examined," said Professor Canfield, "I discovered in them little apparent attempt to ascer- tain in ,the material used the most useful vocabulary." Brumm, head of the journalism department. "It has been found," continued Pro- fessor Brumm, "that the articles need little editing and that the only altera- tions made in them have been for the purpose of cutting them to a given space or adapting them to the style peculiar to the various papers in which they have been published." The purpose of students writing articles for publication is to give them actual experience in newspaper work. Thus far stories have been sent in for syndication at the rate of two or three a week. \ OVER 18,000 BOOKS ADDED TO U. OF M. LIBRARY LAST YEAR Ann Arbor, Mich., Dec. 6.--More than 18,000 books were added to the University of Michigan libraries dur- ing the fiscal year ending June 30 last, according to William Warner Bishop, University librarian.
