[UGHBOY FEELS THAT CAM.
PAIGN FOR HELP FOR FORMER
ENEMIES IS JUSTIFIED
litor, The Michigan Daily:-
Because there seems to be much
sagreement over the matter of
hether Americans should contribute
Austrian relief, as evidenced by the
mmunications of Professor Canfield
.d Professor McLaughlin during the
st week, I take this opportunity to
bmit what I believe must be the
inions of a number of University
idents who differ from the principles
ready stated.
First let me state that in no way
Ye I ever felt friendly toward any
the nations of the Central powers
ring the late war. An American,
for many generations back, I have no
trace of Teutonic blood in my veins.
Except in music and scientific devel-
opment, I have felt no sympathy with
any of the Germanic nations or their
friends. Without prejudice, I do not
admire their literature, art, nor any!
of their accomplishments in the realm-!
of mental achievement. I believe in!
none of the political nor economic
systems which popular belief and re-
liable authorities attribute to them as
sponsors.
Furthermore, during the war I was
engaged in one of the allied armies in
three different branches of combatant
service, and fought for a period of 22
months on every front in France. As
Professor McLaughlin says, I, too,
know only too well the ravages caused
by the Teutonic armies, for I have
seen comrades in arms, my best
friends, fall under the mitrailleuse,
and I have myself heard the roar of
great, destroying, high explosive
shells falling into the cathedral of
Rheims and thundering against the
4eathly half shattered walls and
vaults of this inanimate martyr of
history. And during this time I have
done everything in my power to help
defeat the system that was responsible.
Babies Weak
Some time ago I made a contribu-
tion for the relief of the Austrians. I
had found that there were children
eight and nine years old, 'with the
mentality of babies of three, and that
the strength of the muscles and bones
corresponded to normal babies of a
year and a half old. I was reliably
told that disease was raging through-
out the city of Vienna, and that they
were burying people who were dying
in great numbers every day. I found
that young people were becoming im-
beciles and that the poorer and more
unfortunate of the population were
going insane. And that all of this was
caused by lack' of fuel and clothing

and food-that hunger was leveling off
a population by death and disease.
And many people I know advised me
to pay no attention to the matter, be-
cause these were the same people who
fought against us, and destroyed the
towns and industries of our allies.
Austria Worst
I do not believe this is right. Of
course, we should help our friends be-
fore our enemies, and if France were
in the same situation as Austria I
would not hesitate to give everything,
I could to her before the Teutonic na-
tion. But France is not in such a
plight. It is said that Austria is fac-
ing more terrible suffering in starva-
tion than any other nation in the
world.
It is said that by feeding these peo-
ple now we are nourishing our
enemies on the field of battle 25 years
hence. That may be. And I believe
it is possible. But is there not enough
speculation and lack of probability
about it, to warrant our saving hu-
manity in the terrific battle with
death?
Should We Revenge?
We hold the power in our hands
in denying these peoples our help of
exterminating them as surely as
though we descended upon them with
the sword. Should we in revenge, or
in payment, or in regard for our own
material welfare, or because of the
fear that possibly those whom we save
now will work for our ruin a genera-
tion from now -- should these
reasons, any or all of them, restrain
our hands in giving them back life on
their deathbeds. Shall advantage, or
chastisement, or regard for our fu-
ture security in a remote way, take
the place of mercy and charity? Or
is this sense of justice or self pres-
ervation superior to these other con-
siderations of sentiment?
In the opinion of the majority of
American students, am I right in my
contentions and are the two professors
wrong--and did I do the right thing
in giving to the Austrian relief? It
seems to me that this is a moral ques-
tion which should call for serious
consideration.
