BARTELL ADDRESSES U'sof M2 CKEMI SOCIETY~ Dr. F. E. Bartell, in an address on "Anomalous Osmose and Its Relation to the Behavior of Certain Colloid Systems," before the University of Michigan section of the American Chemical society Tuesday afternoon, spoke on a subject declared to be of importance in bridging the gap hith- erto existing between the chemistry and the biological sciences. This view of the importance of his subject Is held by members of the faculty of both the chemical and biological de- partments., Prof. Bartlett Sees Value Prof. H. H. Bartlett, of the botanical department, said that this subject of anomalous osmose is of fundamental importance in botany and in the other biological sciences as well as in chemistry. He hopes that circum- stances will be such that Dr. Bartell can be the chief speaker at the meet- ing of the Botanical Society of Amer- ica a year from this Christmas, and also that this' paper may be seen in biological as well as chemical liter- ature. The theories presented by Dr. Bar- tell to account for this phenomenon of anomalous osmose are the result of a number of years of work on var- ious types of membranes. This work is of interest to all of the biological sciences such as botany, zoology, and physiology. Appreciation Growing Dr. Bartell said: "I might mention that there is coming to be a greater genuine appreciation of the Import- ance of a consideration of the precise function of colloidal tissues, etc., and of their relation to the study of intern- al medicine. At the present time there is an active movement on foot by committees of the American Chemical society to organize a national labora- tory of medical research at which pro- blems of this nature will be taken up. his type of investigation is new to the chemist, and the biologist has not gone far toward the field of the chem- r st." _______ _ - DRIVE FOR NEEDY STUDENTS OF CENTRAL EUROPE SCORED (Continued from Page Five) ers?
