JLY L 'rsity extension Service Offered to. ]'ichigan Cities colleges. The courses are divided into three groups: free lecture courses, lectures in series, and ex- sion courses for University credit. Three hundred of the free extension lectures are giyen each year. Last year there were 1,000 applications for the 300 lectures. Applications are filled in the order in which they are received. A great variety of topics is given in the list of subects offered for these lectures. (By G. P. 0.) Extension service of the University is being called for this year by com- munities of the state to a far greater extent than at any other time during the history of the Extension depart- ment. The request for free extension lec- tures by faculty members, which in the past have been given in nearly every county of the state to an aggre- gate yearly audience of almost 80,000 persons, has been double that of pre- vious years. Series of lectures have been arranged for a larger number of places, and record enrollment is re- ported'for all extension courses given for Universtiy credit. For instance, a class in Political Economy was organized in Detroit at the requets of the Solvay Process com- pany for their employees. It was thought that about roll. Every course involves 16 to 18 meetings of two hours each, and in addition to the usual class work there may be assigned readings and special reports, depending. on the na- ture of the course. The work is in- tended to correspond in every partic- ular with the same course on the cam- pus. Courses of this nature are being given this year in Detroit on Philos- ophy, Sociology, Journalism, English Literature, and Political Economy. Grand Rapids, Jackson, and Battle Creek also have credit courses. No Correspondence Courses No correspondence courses are of- fered by the University at present, al- though credit is given for work done with a reliable correspondence depar ment of another university. "Every year there are several hun dred inquiries concerning correspond ence'courses that we have to recom mend to another university," state Prof. Henderson recently. "Nine per cent of these inquiries come fro teachers in various parts of the stat The University will undoubtedly ha' to take up consideration of the esta lishment of correspondence courses : connection with the Extension divisio in the near future." Later Prof. W. D.-Henderson, of the Physics department, gave a portion of his time to the work, and two years ago he re- signed from his former position to be- come head of the Extension depart- ment. According to this plan, a course of five lectures is given, with the under- standing that the University pay the cost of two of the lectures, and the organization securing the service bears the remaining expense. The advantage of this feature is that it gives the organization a co-ordinated series of addresses on any subject in 4 -Est. 1905 - 719 North University Avenue --4 ICE CREAM Are you going to take pictures today? In the administration of the exten- sion service co-operation of the regu- larly organized faculties of the Uni- versity is sought, and the work is car- ried on through the medium of the va- rious departments. This plan differs radically from that employed by some institutions, where a separately organ-, ized faculty entirely distinct from the7 University faculty carries on the9 work. The latter plan has been found to be relatively more expensive and less'apt to enlist the interest of the faculty as a whole. Included in the Extension division are twelve bureaus, each operating through a certain department or sub- department of the various schools and which it is especially interested. Recently a series of 10 lectures on "Psychology" was provided for in Grand Rapids. Series of lectures on other subjects will be in progress in Detroit, Monroe, Grand Rapids, and other places during the winter. The University extension credit courses have been conducted for five years. They are organized for the benefit of teachers and those wishing improvement along educational lines as well as for persons planning to Ann Arbor branch render service.
