Immel of the department of oratory. For many years before its establish-1 ment a real need was felt for a prac- tical society of this kind, where womeni might get practice in public speaking. Athena's main purpose is to foster public speaking and debate among Michigan women. It gives practice in; impromptu and extemporaneous work, and it teaches the members the laws of conducting business in parliament-+ ary order. But the weather man's delight is to toy with the elements, and sometimes he sends us cold, drear days with light ufirries of snow, which cause us to take the mothballs out of our overcoat pockets, and to place, instead, our hands in said pockets. On these days, too, the ex-gob buttons up his pea- jacket to the topmost button, and the former doughboy makes use again of his khaki shirt and o. d. overcoat. But if Mr. Weather Man feels in a jocular mood, he teases us with a mild, pleasant day, to warm the hearts which Jack Frost the previous day had chilled. Then off comes the pea- jacket, discarded in tse khaki shirt, relegated to the wardrobe is the over- coat, and ex-gob and doughboy stroll light-heartedly about the campus in summer attire. That's human nature. But some- times human nature has the wrong 'hunch." Anyway, the University health service, which watches over the health of the student body day and bers to criticize the speakers of the evening. Programs Vary The programs for each meeting are made out by a committee with the vice-president of the society acting as chairman. They aim to vary the na- ture of the programs from week to week. The work during the past year included speeches on subjects of cur- rent interest, discussions of various sorts, and debates. On two occasions the meetings as- sumed the nature of political nominat- ing conventions. The society was represented by two of its members on the varsity debating teams, one on the Central League team, and one on the Mid-West team. This is the first year that women have held positions on Michigan debating teams. Hold Tryouts Membership in the society is deter- mined by tryouts in the spring and in the fall. The candidates for admission prepare three-minute speeches and present them before the old members. They are judged on delivery and on the thought in the content of the speech. At the present time the mem- bers in Athena number about 45. In the future the society plans to hold a debate between the freshman and sophomore members. It hopes to make this an annual affair. night, says the "hunch" is wrong, and surely the health service should know. Hark to the advice of the doctors: This is the uncertain season of the year when one cannot be too careful about his health, and should use dis- cretion in the matter of changing clothing. Overcoats and sweaters should be taken off immediately upon entering artificially heated rooms. Rooms should be heated only suffi- ciently to insure comfort, and ventila- tion should be moderated according to the temperature. Disregard of these health rules, says the health service, too often are the causes of light colds and alarming sneezes which later de- velop into more dangerous ills.
