LOCAL FIRE RESULTS IN ONE DEATH FROM SUFFOCATION Two fires, one of them resulting in a loss of life, were extinguished by the fire department early Tuesday morning. Mrs. M. C. Shewcraft was found dead from suffocation in her home at Detroit and Catherine streets at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday morning. The fireman on entering the house found Mrs. Shewcraft lying upon the floor in a small room opening off the kitchen, where it is believed the fire started. Services for Mrs. Shewcraft will be held at 5 o'clock Thursday afternoon. A second fire in the apartments of Mrs. Schreiber, 105 East University avenue, was reported at 1 o'clock, and was extinguished with little damage. CITY. W. C. A. TO CONDUCT CLASSES IN DRESSMAKING Women wishing to enroll in cook- ing, dressmaking, or millinery class- .es given under the supervision of the city Y. W' C. Monday evening, for the purpose of organizing classes in high school English, French, and Spanish. Instruction will be given also in dressmaking, cooking, and millinery, for which University girls are eligible. A number of the pro- fessors' wives have enrolled in these classes. Mrs. R. J. Carney, who is in, charge of the educational commit- tee, hopes that there will be at least 150 enrolled for work before Nov. 8. D. A. R. to Hold First Social Meeting The Sarah Caswell Angell chapter of the D. A. R. will hold its Novem- ber meeting at 3 o'clock Thursday aft- ernoon of this week instead of the regular date.
