one alumi of the University of Michi-
gan were in the service of the United
States during the World war, accord-
ing to statistics compiled by Harley
,. Senseman, director of the alumni
catalogue office. Mr. Senseman has
gathered together material relative to
the activities of the alumni of the Uni-
versity during the wr from military
circulars secured from various sour-
ces.
Of the 12,601 men in service 4,761
were officers. Of this number 3,880
were army officers, 531 navy officers,
317 aviation officers, and 48 naval avia-
tion fiicers. The University sent one
major general, 4 brigadier generals,
2 rear admirals, and 1 lieutenant colo-
nel.
Otte Hundred and sixty-six faculty
men entered theservice and of this
number 85 were officers. 2, 151 stu-
dents were enrolled in the University
of Michigan S. A T. C. and 596 in the
U. S. N. C.
224 Decorations Conferred
Two hundred and twenty-four dec-
orations were conferred upon alumni
of the University.. The Italian govern-
ment bestowed 23, the Cuban 1, the
British 16, the Roumanian 1, the Mon-
tenegran 1, the Belgian 6, the Serbian
2, the French 119, the Russian 2, the
Canadian 2, the United States 28. Un-
classified decorations total 23.
According to the statistics compiled
by Mr. Senseman 234 alumni died in
the service of the' United States. Of
this number 127 died within the United
States while 107 died on foreign soil.
Of the 234 men who gave their lives
in th3 war 117 had seen overseas ser-
vice and 117 had not been outside the
United States..
Thirty-seven alumni were killed in
action with infantry, 8 in aeroplane
battles; 142 died of disease, 3 were
killed in automobile accidents, 16 in
aeroplane accidents, and 1 in a rail-
road accident. Fifteen died from
wounds received in action, 4 were lost
in the sinking of vessels by subma-
rines, 2 were killed in drill accidents,
3 in accidental drownings, and 3 by
suicide.
Seniseinan Praises Alumni
In aletter to University officas giv-
ing the results of his investigation, Mr
Senseman says, "I have neither time
nor space to give any hint of some of
the very remarkable accounts concern-
ing the activities and services of many
of our alumni. Some of the stories re-
ceived read like the most idealistic
fiction and tell of the many acts of
heroism, strategy, self-sacrifice, devo-
tion, and disregard for safety in the
discharge of' duty. So far as I have
been able to follow the records there
was not a single case of desertion or
culpable conduct among our alumni.
The returns received by Mr. Sense-
man show that two former students
in the University served with the Ger-
man army during the war. i.41
