After selection~ of the successful

o appointment in the regular army
)n April 25, there will remain more
ha~n 3,000 vacancies in the commis-
Toned personnel of the Army.
When promotions under the reor-,
;anziatlon law have been completed,
number of vacancies will exist in
he grade of first lieutenant, an~d the
emainder in that of second lieuten-
,t. While! it is not proposed to fill
A1 vacancies at present, the necessity
or more officers for the army re-
[uires that a portion of the vacancies
e filled without delay.
An examination for appointment as
second lieutenant will therefore be
geld August 22. Appointments will be
aade in the following branches only:
afantry, cavalry, field artillery, coast
rtillery, engineers, air service, signal
orps, quartermaster corps, ordnance
epartment, chemical warfare service,;
nd Philippine scouts.
The date announced is that of, the
fnal examination, prior to which,' ap-
lications must be submitted rand ap-
dicants must undergo a prel miniar
xamination. Details for info rmatin
oncerning these examinations for ap-

pointment are contained in regula-
tions which are expected to arrive at
the R. 0. T, C., offices by the end of
the week.
UNIVERSITY UNION
PROVES SUCCESS
Evidence of the scope and signifi-
cance of the present wok of the Amier-
ican University Union in France is
furnished by letters received recent-
ly by the Union from well known
American professors.
Among the commendations received
is one from Prof. James W. Garner,
of the University of Illinois, who1
states that the University Union is an
indispensable institution which, high-
ly deserves the support of American
universities.
Prof. Frank Hankins, of Clark Uni-
versity, in a letter to thte secretary
of the Union, ,says: "I consider' the
American University Union indispens-
able now and I forsee expanded use-
fulness for it in the future."

Other American professors writing
to commend the work- of the Union
were Prof. Richard Gottheil, of Colum-
bia. university, Prof. Herman Babson,
of Purdue university, and Prof. Wen-
dell T.' Bush, of Columbia university.
All of these> men were engaged in
work on the continent during the past
year and in touch with the American
jUnivesity Union at various times.

been invited to speak to the graduates
of the Akron Municipal University at
Akron, Ohio. Mr. Shaw has accepted
and will speak before that body on
June 15. From there he will go to
Oberlin, 0., to address the alumni of
Oberlin on June 21.
