Reminiscences of Michigan's track
season-f 1921 bring to mind many
welcome memories. Although Coach
Steve Farrell's men failed to win the
Big Ten champioiship in either in-
door or outdoor meets, the results ob-
tained are far from disappointing, for
the wearers of the Maize and Blue
achieved more than the most profound
optimist expected.
Starting the indoor season with a
,dual meet against the University of
Chicago at the Windy City, the Maroons
proved no match for the Farrellites,
falling before the Wolverine track men
by the score of 64 to 31. Next on the
schedule came the Illinois indoor re-
lay carnival, three firsts going to the
' Maize and Blue entries. WesbrookI
took the pole vault with ease, Cruick-
shank captured the broad jump, and.
Walker tied for first honors in the high
Jump with Albert of Illinois, and Paige
of Iowa State college.

California Too Strong
During spring vacation the cinder
men took the longest trip ever at-
tempted by a Michigan track team,
I
meeting the University of California
at Berkeley in the first outdoor meeti
of the year. The Bruins proved
themselves to be probably the greatest
track team in the country today when
they won the meet 95 to 43. The long
trip was of course partially responsi-
ble for Michigan's failure to do bet-
ter, but it cannot be denied that Cali-
fornia's team was, easily the °supe-
rior. Butler lost his first race of the
year to any man other than his own
team-mate when Sprott won the 440.
In a hotly contested meet at Colum-
bus early in May, Michigan defeated
Ohio State 69 to 66.. Once more Cap-
tam Butler was defeated, this time by
Pittenger. The Wolverine leader was
boxed half way around the track and
was unable to break loose in time to
cross the mark 'in the lead. Illnois
downed Michigan at Urbana, 82 to 531
on May 14. The meet was featured
by fast times in all events. The last
outdoor meet was against Chicago at
Ann Arbor, the Maroons proving no
match for Michigan and losing by the
overwhelming score of 108 to 27.
Second in Conference
The season closed with the outdoor
Conference meet at Chicago on June
4. As in the indoor event Illinois
won, with Michigan second and Wis-
consin third. Notre Dame took fourth
place, with the remaining 12 teams'
trailing behind, while but two, Cin-
cinnati and Ohio Wesleyan, failed to
score.
Graduation Hits Hard
The outlook for next year is not
any too promising, for many of Mich-
igan's best men will be lost through
graduation. Captain Butler's lost
will be particularly felt. The big

year, and could always be counted on
for high honors. Only three times in
the year was he defeated, once by his
own team-mate, Wetzel, who will also
be among those absent from the squad

SANCHEZ ANNEXES
NET CHAMPIONSHIP
Sanchez took the singles title In the
tennis tourney by defeating Hodgman
yesterday, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, Hodgman
worked up to the finals by winning
from Gregory, 9-7 and 6-2, while San-
chez did away with. Kline in the semi-
finals by 4-6, 6-2, and 6-0 scores.
Today, Sigma Phi Epsilon will fight
it out for the fraternity Championship
with Alpha Rho Chi. Zeta Psi fell be-
fore Sigma Phi Epsilon Tuesday by a
2-1 score, and Alpha Rho Chi elimin-
ated Chi Psi with a 2-0 beating. Fin-
als also will be held between the Du2-
akin and Zook team and the winner of
the Bowels-Creedon and Parson-Beau-
dette match.

Take State Honors
At the Michigan Aggie stake. indoor
meet at Lansing, the Michigan team
walked away with honors on all sides
and without extending themselves.
Walker took the high jump, at the same
time establishing a new gymnasium
record, Wesbrook garnered the pole
vault, and the two-mile elay team
,paraded'across the last mark far in the
lead. Van Orden took second in the
shot put and Stipe third.
Then came the indoor Conference
meet at Evanston on the big indoor
track of Northwestern university. Illi-
nois, with 45 points, took first, Mich-
igan second and Wisconsin third, the
two latter counting 25 1-2 and 23 re-
spectively. Minnesota and 'Purdue
also scored, but Northwestern, Chica-
go, Indiana, and Ohio representatives
failed to take points. Simmons. Losch,
and Captain Butler starred for the
Wolverines. /
The Big Red team of Cornell univer-
sity visited Waterman gymnasium in
March, and bowed to Michigan 50 1-2
to 35 1-2, the Wolverines taking 7 out
