Bernstein) Points Michigan, in gamnes won, holds a de- cided lead over the team that today is furnishing them with the toughest opposition of this year. Michigan, in points scored, has more than doubled those that the Indians in the past were able to count. Figure Standing Yourself What effect today's and the seventh battle between the two teams has had upon this standing, you yourself can figure out. Michigan and Illinois met for the first time on the football field back in the 19th century. It was in 1898 that the two teams were pitted against each other for the first time. Michigan won that first battle by a single touch- down. A tied score featured the con- test until late in the game when the Wolverines scored a second time, mak- ing the points read 12 to 5. Last year Michigan and Illinois met for the sixth time. Illinois won its first victory over the Wolverines in that year, and by an overwhelming score. The count was 27 to 9. 1919 il ichigaWs Off Year Last year was an off year for the Maize and Blue. It was the most dis- astrous season that a Michigan foot-I ball team has ever experienced, and 1it was during that season that the Illini were able to score their first win over Michigan. Today the seventh battle between the two schools was fought. Illinois, re- alizing that Michigan last year was by no means up to its usual standards, battled today to establish itself su- perior to the Maize and Blue. Michi- gan on the other hand, feeling keenly the effects of the 1919 season, fought to re-establish itself firmly among thel leaders of the west-a position which was endangered by the disastrous season of 1919. There is a peculiar significance in the scores of the six games that the two schools have already played with each other. Tabulated, they would appear as follows: Year Michi. Ill. 1898................... 12 5 1899................... 5 0 1900................... 12 0 1905 ................ 1906 .................. 1919 .................. 33 0 28 9 7 29 Team - won Michigan.... The last time they won but could not keep the Wolverines from scoring. 'Maize and Blue Scare Eaeh Tim~e Every time Michigan and Illinois have met, Michigan has scored, even when the Wolverines were the poorest in the history of Maize and Blue foot- ball teams. The Illini won the Big Ten chain- pionship last year. They won the honors by playing a brand of football that was possibly the best in the country that season. Whether they can repeat or not this year depends a lot on today's battle. Michigan and Illinois after today will have met seven times. The riv- alry between the two schools has made every game between the two schools, real battles. Both teams put every- thing they had into every conflict In which they have met. Every time there was no question about the fact that the better team won, and today the same thing holds true.
