IFr U' SAYS SUMMER RESORTS P OOR IN SANITATION' Michigan summer resorts need some adequate form of governing organiza- tion, according to Maj. Edward D. Rich, director of sanitary engineering of the state department of health. "Summer resorts are summer colon- ies," and frequently are occupied by more people than they are capable of accommodating. Often summer cot- tages house more people than resid- ences of the same size and the hotels are always crowded to the utmost dur- ing the rush season. Such dwellings are not properly equipped to house so many people and consequently the proper conveniences and sanitation is denied them. Moreover, the people visiting at most resorts come from cities where the water supply is carefully guarded, and, unless careful attention is given to the water supply at the resorts, it is almost certain to become dangerous. As a solution to this ever increasing menace, Major Rich proposes that re- sort districts form subsidiary branches of the Michigan Tourist and Resort association -which is an organizatioji for bettering local sanitary govern- ment and that they hire trained sanit- ary inspectors for the summer months.
