M., May 23.-Tyrone, queen of the mining camps of the state, built at a cost of $3,000,000 and given Rn artistic atmosphere through the in- fluence of Mrs. Cleveland H. Dodge, is an empty shell. ..A few short months ago 4,500 men, GAN DAILY ELLIOT NAMED WINNER BUS LINE ADRIAN-TECVMSEH-ANN ARBOR IN SPE NG ONTEST CeStandard Time Sun- -NOI~'TH Week da Welcome to A] May ORATORICAL BOARD REVERSES PREVIOUS DECISION DUE TO ERROR Lv. Now the Phelps-Dodge cor- poration big copper mines are closed, there is no ore awaiting shipment, no means of livelihood remains, stores, have been closed, inhabitants are leav- ing, the railroad has served notice that trains no longer will run. Within .a short time only a dozen men, left to guard the mines and their expensive machinery, will be left. Even the Phelps-Dodge Corporation gener- al store has closed and the entire stock has been shipped to Douglas. Tryone boasts the most beautiful railroad station in the state, built by the mining corporation. Homes of miners are bungalows, not the usual shanty type of western mining camps. Company houses were not built of one type. They are all different. The camp was the pet of Mrs. Dodge and largely through her influence a Southern Cali- fornia type of building was carried out. Closing of the town, however, is con- sidered only a temporary measure, ac- cording to company officials, who point out that the shut-down will continue as long as the copper market remains in its present state of stagnation. A hospital, theatre, library, elabo- rate school building and one of the best electric lighting and power plants in the state are among the town's at- tractions. P. P. Elliott, '22, has been awardedI first place in the extemporaneous speaking contest held last week, ac-I cording to an announcement by Prof. T. C. Trueblood, of the public-speaking department. This reverses the pre- vious decision, which, owing to a mis- understanding of the .rules which gov- ern the awards, gave first honors to P. A. Rehmus, '23, placing Elliott sec- ond. Rehmus now ranks second. The mistake in the decision devel- oped when the standings of the various contestants were computed on the basi of reports from eight judges, whereas 1 only seven of the eight invited judges had turned In reports. Plan one of the authorized method of rendering decisions provides that any speech which receives the major- ity of first rank shall be declared first. As only seven judges were pres- ent and four credited Eliott with first he received the actual majority. However, had there been eight judges, Elliott would not have received a majority of firsts, thus necessitating the use of plan two which provides that if no decision can be reached by plan' one the speech shall be marked first the sum of whose ranks is the lowest. It was by this plan that Rh'mus was awarded the first position the night of the contest. It was -also announced that .. R. Dickinson, '22, and H. Hertz, '22, had tied for third honors. A third plan of the rules for decisions provides that in case of a tie by plan two the speech which receives the highest grand total per cent shall be declared first. Both of these men received the same rank but Hertz came in ahead of Dickinson with 335 to 214 points. Professor Trueblood explained that while the Oratorical board regretted very much the necessity of bringing up this matter again it felt that it could not break away from the author- ized method of making judgments. The Northern Oratorical league uses the same means of determining the winners of those contests. Illinois is now contesting the decision which was rendered at Iowa City recently. b Want anything?
