shores of Barton dam and held an old-
time picnic. The freshman band ac-,
companied the engineers and fur-
nished music for the trip. ,
The men left from the engineering
arch at 5:30 o'clock in the afternoon.'
After their lunch, which consisted of
wienies, coffee, and doughnuts fur-
nished by a caterer, various races and
a general sing of Michigan songs took
place. George A. Abbott won the 75-
yard race; the 25-yard dash was won
by Clyde C. Pattinson, while Worthing
R. Norton captured the potato race.
Franklin C. Cappon and Richard H.
Rowland defeated all 'contestants in
the three-legged affair, and Hugh G.
Benson together with Charles E. Proc-
tor won the wheelbarrow contest. 1
After the races and songs the whole
party returned to the city and sere-!
naded several houses. A general good
time followed in the tap room of the
Union, where the band played several
selections.

WAR DEPARTMENT READY TO
APPROVE ORDNANCE UNIT
Informal notice to the effect that the
war department is prepared to ap-
prove, upon application, an ordnance
unit of the R. 0. T. C. at the University
has been received by Major Robert
Arthur, professor of military science
and tactics.
Twelve students of the necessary
minimum of 50 having expressed their
desire to enroll in an ordnance unit,
a request for approval of such a unit
will be submitted this month. Enroll-
ment will be more or less restricted
to students taking courses in -hem-
ical engineering.
The officer to take charge of the
ordnance unit will arrive at the begin-
ning of the next semester.
