THE MICHIGAN DAILY U " : " .r._..., i .... FAVORED T VARSITY stance Runs, Weights, Give Indians Edge Today VS COUNTED ON FOR FIRSTS IN 100 AND 220 Ilinois strength in the distance runs, weight events, and the two jumps make the Orange and Blue al- most certain winners in the meet at Urbana today. Michigani athletes must extend themselves to equal the marks that Illinois made in the Notre Dame meet last Saturday. Simntons seems a good bet for first honors in both the 100 and 220 yard dash. Here the Illini has only Pres- cott and Fields, both of whom have been beaten by the Michigan runner. Wetzel is running these races for the first time in his career at theUni versity of Michigan, but has shown sufficientispeed this week to merit consideration. Losch and Kelly, two other Varsity runners who have run well in the sprints this year are not in the best of condition and have been left here to get into shape for tho Conference meet. Butler'Should Win 440 Donohoe and Sweet are the quarter milers that will offer chief opposition to Captain Butler and Lewis. The Michigan leader should take this race, unless the half mile in which he will also compete has been run before. Douglas is the other Michigan entry in the half mile, and Burkholder has been placed alone in the mile. The Michigan miler will have to run the best race of his career to place against the brilliant Illini trio, Patterson, Me- Ginnis, and ,Wharton. Against Notre Dame, Naughton, Dusenberry, and Wharton, were all tied for first in the two mile in the exceedingly fast time of 10 minutes. Opposed to this team, Standish, the lone Varsity entry, will have a hard timne placing. Turning to the field events Michigan should take two places in the pole vault, as Illinois has only Collins, whose best efforts have been bested by both Wesbrook and Naylor. Varsity Strong in Broad Jump The Varsity should also score heav- ily in the running broad jump, with both Criukshank and Wesbrook leak - ing around 23 feet,. which should 'Ue eonugh to defeat dforne and Alberta The high jump is conceeded to Al. berts, who is now one of the best jumpers in collegiate America, with the exception of Landon, of Yale. The Illinois jumper topped six feet, four inches against Notre Dame. Walker and Osborne should contest second place. Weiss will give Michigan shot put- ters and discus heavers strong bat- tles in these two events, as he has recent marks of 43 and 136 feet, re- spectively. Stipe and Van Orden are the Michigan contestants in the shot put, with Dunne and Jacob in the dis- cus. Stipe will also throw the ham- mer, for the Varsity. The strength of the Illini here is unknown, as they have not had a hammer throw in any of the meets this year. CRUIKSHANK, WHO IS EXPECTE point winner in the meet with Illin Iinnesota Tennisa Match With Va Minnesota's tennis team will oppose the Varsity net men at 10:15 o'clock this morning on the Ferry field courts. This is the third match of the year for the Michigan team and the second to be played on the home courts. The Minnesota team is on a two game trip, having played the Uni- versity of Detroit on Thursday and winding up with the Maize and Blug squad today. Gophers Beat Detroit 5 to 1 Little is known as to the strength of the Gophers. Other than their 5 to 1 defeat of Detroit, it has been impossible to learn the results of any of their other matches. They had lit-1 the difficulty apparently with the racket men from Detroit. The Minne- sota team is made up of Norton, C. Bros, B. Bros, and Pidgeon. Norton Javelin Close Hoffman and Dunne are promised a merry afternoon in trying to keep pace with Brede, the Illinois javelin star. Recently he threw the wand 181 feet. Cruikshank should score a. double win in the two hurdle events, aa this is the one place in which Illinois lacks strength. Wallace and Prescott are the only men at the Urbana school capable of giving an argument to the Michigan squad, which will be Cruikshank and Sargent in the high sticks, and these men plus Swift in the lows. Only Two Certain of Places Cruikshank and Simmons are the only men on Coach Farrell's squad at all certain of places. Captain Butler should be returned a winner, but his running of late has been more or less erratic and he cannot be strong- ly counted upon. If he is in good form none of the Illinois quarter mil- ers will be able to touch. him, and he should place in the half mile as 'well. Only by the most astonishing of surprises, will Michigan be able to win, as Illinois is far too strong to lose 'to the ill-balanced Michigan squad.
