S tI f1gts'ffi the performance of
thew EliJah" on Thursday night of the
May Festival week. His work has
won esteem both in this country and
abroad.
He -is successful in several fields of
singing such as Metropolitan opera,
oratorio, festival work, and song re-
cital. It is in this last, however, that
he has won his greatest popularity.
More-than 60 citiesheard him last sea-
aon during a coast to* coast tour, and
press reports are-unanimous in praise
of -his singing.
Mr: Murphy is another of-those sing-
ers who show that-America can pro-
duce- artists of the first rank. He was
born in Springfield, Mass., and received
his university education at Harvard."
While at college he was active in dra-
matics and earned considerable repute
on the stage in amateur performances.
Two years after his graduation, he be-
came a member of the Metropolitan
Opera company.
His voice is said to be well placed,
flexible, and responsive, and to show
the results of careful cultivation and
skillful training. He sings equally
well, in French and in English. Audi-
ences and critics,-think of him as one
of the most polished masters of vocal
expression that America has to her
credit.

Disease Report
nome. tan 28 in November and even
lgher figures in January and March.
. A marked decrease in disease is
noted as a result of Health service
work at the University, despite the
great increase in enrollment during
the past few years.
The report concludes with a recom-
mendation for further extension of the
service's functions by establishment of
a separate department for the further
development of health promotion.

That women are less susceptible to
colds and similar infections than men
is exploded in a recent report of the
University Health service to the Jour-
nal of the American Medical associa-
tion. Figures for a nine-year period
show that the yearly average of illness
for women is much higher than for
men, the conclusion being in accord
with the results obtained at Cornell
university.
Great variations are discovered in
the yearly totals of contagious dis-
eases and respiratory infections. Dur-
ing the years 1917 and 1918, probably
lflie to war conditions and the influ-
enza epidemic, the number leaped from
an average of three per 1,000 to more
than 18. Respiratory diseases again
reached a high point in the winter of
-1919-1920, returning nearly to normal
last winter.
Skin diseases show a peculiar con-
dition. Early in the fall the average
reached its highest point, while'during
the course of the year,-die, says the
report, to the features of life at the
University, the number steadily de-
creased until at the end of -the- college
year it declined to practically zero.
Diseases of the throat and lungs
show, as might be expected, marked
increases during the winter months,
rising from less than four per 1,000 to
