- THE MICHIGAN D IL\ .R MANS BECOME TIRED' F __: WA-INPLEDGE RE THAN 10,000 MEN FORM CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS' UNION Philadelphia, April 27.-Conscien- us objectors to war service in Ger- ny have formed a union with more n 10,000 members, each of whom s signed a pledge that they will ther take up arms, produce war terial, give money, nor aid in any y in what they characterize as the ganized murder of subjects of other intries or of our own countrymen." Phis information comes from How- l H. Brinton, a member of the So- ty of 'Friends from West Chester, who recently attended a public eting in Berlin held under the aus- es of the "German Union of Ob- tors to War Service." I expected to find a dozen or so g-haired persons sitting about a le, and instead found a hall, jam- I to the doors with about 800 peo- the air tense with suppressed en- siasm," said Mr. Brinton. ne of the speakers said the organ- ion was formed by German war loners in England after they were wnitted to return to Germany. A student who was a speaker at the meeting, declared that there was great need in the universities for a spiritual awakening since the old military party was still strong there, and demanded revenge on the enemy. FESTIVAL NOTES Verdi's "Aida," to be given on the Saturday evening of May Festival week, offers a collection of artists which includes some of the greatest singers in the country.' Among these is Cyrena Van Gordon, contralto with the Chicago Opera company.I This will be her second appearance+ in Ann Arbor this season, the first one being that with the Detroit Symphony orchestra last March. The depth, rich- ness and variety of color of her voice combined with her beauty and regal bearing make her one of the greatest contraltos of today. Best in "Aida" The part of Amneris, which she will take in the performance of "Aida," is one in which she is at her best. At the present time she sings most of the leading contralto roles in the operas produced by the Chicago Opera company. Her concert work has also brought her much praise. The roles which she sings include Azucena in "1 Trovatore," Laura in "La Giocon- do," and the Wagnerian contralto parts of Ortrud, Erda, Frica, and Waltraute. Trained in Cincinnati Miss Van Gordon is an Ohioan by birth and her early training was ob- tained in Cincinnati. It was in one of the performances of a pageant called "Darkness and Night," that Cleofonte Campanini heard her. He at once of- fered her a position with the Chicago Opera company, with which she has sung ever since. ALLY ENVOYS TALK OVER REPARATION (By Associated Press) Washington, April 27. - Secretary Hughes invited all ambassadors of the Allied powers to meet him at the state department yesterday following re- ceipt of the new German reparation proposals.! It was stressed that the purpose of the assemblage was for informal dis- cussion of German communication and not in any sense a diplomatic trans- mission of the United States on the German offer. It was said that there was little probability that an American reply to! the German communication would go forward tonight. It was indicated that a reply would await the receipt of the view of the Allied government regard- ing the German proposition.
