R. Turner of the history de- partment, in your issue of April 5, concerning the report of the committee of one hundred on conditions in Ire- land, permit me to say the following: Contrary to Professor Turner's im- plication that the committee was tinged with Bolshevism and radical- ism, it must be said that this was not the case. An examination of the per- sonnel of the committee will convince anyone that it was fairly representa- tive of sane American opinion. The committee of one hundred, besides con- taining no less eminent personage than the late Cardinal Gibbons, consisted also of 5 governors, 11 United States senators, 13 congressmen, the mayors of 15 large cities, 4 Roman Catholic bishops, 4 Methodist bishops, Arch- bishop Keane, and other well-known individuals of good standing and repu- tation. The investigations and proceedings were made by a sub-committee con- sisting of L. Hollingsworth Wood, a Quaker lawyer of New York; Frederic C. Howe, former commissioner of im- migration of New York; James H. Maurer, president of the A. F. of L. of Pennsylvania; Rev. Norman Thomas, Presbyterian clergyman; Major Oliver P. Newman, former president of Board of Commissioners of District of Co- lumbia; Miss Jane Addams, of Hull house, Chicago; Senator David I. Walsh. of Massachusetts, and Senator George W. Norris, of Nebraska. Whether the pudgment of the above is trustworthy is a matter of individual opinion, but of its honesty and integ- rity there can be no question. bringing about the investigation, for which the committee alone is respon sible. As long as Professor Turner discusses the Irish question on the basis of historical principles, his com- petency to do so cannot be doubted; but when he attempts to defend the British treatment of Ireland within recent years, he will have to use bet-' ter grounds than those indicated in his letter to you. Else how could he have overlooked the re- port of the British Labor party which carried on an investigation in Ireland, and as a result condemned the govern- ment of England in no uncertain terms. The connection of the New Yorkr "Nation" with the report does not make it less significant. The "Nation's" attitude toward certain political ques- tions in no way disqualifies it as a respectable publication. A sympatheticE attitude toward Soviet Russia is not necessarily indicative of utter deprav- ity, If the writer remembers correct- ly, Professor Turnei himself stated, in one of his lectures on English history, that the early Christians were regard- ed in the same way as the Bolsheviki are looked upon today.
