It was while singing in Utica, N. Y., in the concert form of "Aida" that the operatic possibilities of Mr. Middle ton's voice were brought to the atten- tion 'of Mme. France Alda, wife of Giulio Gatti-Casazza, general managerl of the Metropolitan Opera company. It was arranged that he should sing before the directorate of the company, and, after doing so, was at once en- gaged. His opera repertoire includes Aida, Parsival, Lohengrin, FidelQ, Carmen, Rheingold, Euryanthe, Faust,' Martha, and Der Freischutz. The fact that this bass-baritone sings more than 50 oratorios without notes shows the wonderful musical meniory which he has. His popularity is shown by the fact that he has appeared over 200 times in the Messiah Wand 150 times in the Elijah.
