Surveying the heterogeneous mass of colorful shirts and jerseys on the backs of our first-year men in the4 gymnasium, an impartial judge would say it was a high-school boy's play hour. In previous years such a condition would not hake been tolerated for a moment and this .s a poor year to allow the practice to )egin. Let us have no more of this display of prep school colors and letters. The incom- ing men should wear plain white until they here prove their fitness to wear a real letter and real colors. HAROLD D. DRAPER, '20. Oriental itures Land of Nativityv Arrangements for holding meetings in the society rooms on the third floor should be made by the respec- tive societies immediately. In order that no conflict of dates may occur, it is necessary that a schedule should soon be drawn up. Preparations are being made to handle all societies, and store rooms will be supplied for any parapherna- lia. Dennis Donovan has charge of arrangements for meetings. More than half of the floor for the assembly room has been laid, and the remainder will probably be put down within the next two days. As yet work on placing the panelling $or the walls has not started. Did our team win? Don't ask ques- tions, read the Michigan Daily. All campus, city and world news.-Adv. Singh, the man of the turban, who is attending the University with the intent of eventually gaining the Med- ical Doctor's degree, will someday re- turn to his native Punjab India, there to live and practice his profession. Punjab-he will tell you-is the Per- sian for "Five Rivers"; five rivers in that region joining to form the Indus. Only a year and a half ago this man landed in San Francisco. Yet he speaks fluent and vivid English, his voice having intonations that even enrich our tongue. "English?" he laughed. "No, it was not hard for me to learn. I do not have the least idea how I came into the English language." The "Man from the Five Rivers" did not remain long on the western coast. There his people are not always treated well. They are often refused admittance to hotels and restaurants. Would the East and the West ever meet? He could not tell. Buit this he knew, the Orient was good to live in. Americans know how to make money, Americans are very wonderful; but in India people are kind, and hospitality is rife. No one is ever turned away from a door without food or lodging. "What characteristics do your people. possess that Americans do not?" was asked. "Spirituality," he answered. "Every- thing is materialism here. In India men often forsake wealth, while here that is your great incentive. I often wonder at Americans coming to India to teach us spirituality." The thread of his conversation is picturesquely oriental. He told of the Sikh religion which is only about 450 years old, and to which cult he him- self belongs. The turban is significant only as a covering for the hair. No hair, according to the Hindu belief, should ever be cut. Qn his right wrist is a thin iron, bracelet, delicately wrought, which must never be removed. "If I were to, commit a sin," he explained, "my right hand would be- in use. Pureness of mind is taught in India as the essential of good living. Many people disregard the body almost en- tirely. There are legends of prophets and metaphysicians who have been accredited with the healing of incur- able disease. But the "Man from the ,Five Rivers" 'is primarily interested in chemistry, biology, physics, and medics. His eyes--the native eyes-are those of the poet, dreamer, benefactor, scien- tist, all combined. AtTie Union Organization of the recording secre- tary's office is being made by officials.
