Bates of the Law school has decided definitely to re- main in Ann Arbor, according to statements made by him Saturday.; For more than a year Dean Bates has been considering a tempting offer from another university, and it is only recently that he decided to refuse the offer. Anxiety has been widespread over ,rumors that the dean had accepted this offer and would resign from his present position. General satisfac- tion is expressed over his decision to remain in Ann Arbor. Although the dean was reticent in regard to what school the offer came from, it is understood that it came from Harvard university. GOVERNMENT LIQUOR CONTROL DECREASES DRUNKENNESS London, Sept. 27.-Lord D'Abercorn, head of the liquor control board, in a speech at Carlisle vindicating the government's policy with respect to intoxicants, declared that there had been a great decrease in drunkenness due to state control. The work of the board, he said, had vindicated the school of moderation and of reasonable and scientific con- trol. He claimed that the control board "had put an end to the appall- ing condition of drunkenness and in- efficiepcy which existed in 1915 and which paralyzed the war efficiency of the country."
