indiana
Bloomington, March 27.-The var'-
sity baseball squad was taken through
its first practice game of the season
this afternoon when they opposed the
second varsity. The practice contest
brought forth a multitude of rough
spots in the play of the candidates.
Outfield men are still scarce and the.
illness of Teeters, a veteran center-
fielder, is keenly felt. The pitching
department is well taken care of and.
each of the six ,contestants for the
moupd job are doing exceptionally
well.
Purduet
Lafayette, March'® 27. - Favorable
weather is giving baseball candidates
a good opportunity to get in shape and
to dispel the attack of sore arms.
Great stress is being laid on batting'
and long practice hours are schedul-
ed each afternoon. Practice games
have been arranged with various pro-
fessional teams including F'airbanks
Morse and a'team from Flint.

Iowa State
Ames, Iowa, March 27.-Mote than
40 baseball candidates turned out in
response to Coach Mayer's summons
for the initial outdoor workout of the
season: ast night. With the first game
only a few weeks away, the coach is
spending every, effort to forge his ma-,
terial in some sort of shape.
Iowa
Iowa City, Iowa, March 27.-Base-
ball players got their first real send-
off this afternoon when the university
squad began practice outd.oors. The
team has been doing well in the gym-
but has suffered from lack of suffi-
cient room to do much batting. Little
of the real strength of the team can
be estimated at this early date. With
four fielders fromlast year, three vet-
eran pitchers, and some fine material
from last year's freshman team, Coach
Ashmore hopes to develop a winning
team.

Speaking sof Sports
By Rob Angell
Heard in Ypsi last Sunday: "Yes,
spring is surely here. I saw a robin
yesterday and the Ann Arbor boys
are beginni'ng to flock down again:,"
Showing that another sport is still
on the active list.
The 'Michigan track team at the
Cornell meet yesterday was enter-
tained by the Savage club. That or-
ganization evidently thought, that, if
it went on the warpath, it would be
a godd plan to have a Slaughter, a
Cook, and a Butler around.

Three Preparatory Ies
The first three leagues which were
played were in their, nature prepara-
tory' for the interclass race which has
just closed. The first two were not
open to the general campus but the
last one was. Due to these series most
of the' men in the interclass cofntests
werein good condition when the sea-
son began and therefore a superior
brand of basketball could be played.
T he interfraternity league had the
largest entry list, 42 teams having
been engaged in the race. This was
followed by 'the society league in
which 10 clubs and campus organiza-
tions entered.. Eighteen department
teams took part in the next series and
three more than that in the interclass
race.s

Athletics took a new lease of life
during the, past week.. No longer have
the baseball players a convenient net
to stop their wild heaves. The golf
enthusiasts have donned the old 0. D.
pants and stockings. which would
Joseph's coat blush ,for shame. A
score or 'more, tennis cranks have been
caught gamboling on the concrete,
and the Ferry field track has been
raked into shape in preparation for
the coming out party of Farrell's men
this week. Indoor balls are once
again th"reatening to decapitate un-
suspecting professors, and 'the penny
gablers make tinkling music on the
sidewalks.

Fresh Lits Strong
One of the features of the, last se-
ries was the admission of more than
one team from each department. The
unusual strength and great enthusi-
asm of the fresh lit class was"man-
ifested by the fact that four. teams
were entered representing ttiat class
and that two .of these placed for nu-
merals while a 'third finished well up
in the race.
The winners of the interfraternity,
society, department and interciass
leagues, are, respectively, Phi Kappa
Sigma, the trp-Staters, Nicholson's
business ads, and the senior lits, in
that order.
Three Campus Teams
Three all-campus teams ,have been
selected by the votes 6f the four ofR-
cials, Intramural Director Mitchell, in-
tramural Manager Watts and his four
men are as follows:
First team: Cohn, upperclass laws,
f, Fairchilds, '23, f, Eb~ner Cress, *20,
c, VanBoven, '20, g, Smith, underclass
medics, g.
Second team: -Zinn, '23, f, Quartel,
'23, f, B. Loring, upperclaas laws, c,
LeGalley, '23, g, Earl Creas, '20,'g.
Third team: Crawford, '22E, f, Rey-
nolds, 21E, f, Davidson, '23E, c, Pie-
tro, '23, g, Crawford, '23, g.
Twelve other men received -ome
votes but not enough to put them on
the teams. Brown, Dudk, Gray, M.
Loring, Randall, Rehmus, and Uterits'
are the men from the class of '23. The-
others are Edison, '20, Gallagher and
Novak, '21, Hickey, '22E, and Tramp,
'23E..
Columbia Eastern Feneing Winner
Ne' York, March 27.-Columbia won
the intercollegiate fencing title last
week by defeating Pennsylvania 9 to
7. The New Yorkers have gone
through the season without a defeat
and in most matches far outranked
their opponents. The championship
was virtually clinched for Columbia
by the brilliant work of Captain
Bloomer, who won three bouts with
ease from the best man that Coach
'Terrone could produce.
