Former soldiers, sailors, and mar-
ines on the campus have discovered a
new favorite indoor sport in the form
of telling how they would spend the
money they would receive under the
proposed Royal Johnson bill now
pending in congress, according to the
testimony of a "cub" reporter. He.
says that many ex-service men have
already spent their share of the
money:
One sophomore lit states that the
bonus he would get under the bill
would be spent for his funeral, ex-
penses, inasmuch that he would drop
dead if he should receive his portion.
An upperclassman suggests that
he would pay up the interest on
his debts to individuals on State street
and elsewhere=.
, Another declares that he would
fulfill a long cherished desire, to buy
a bull-dog.
Still others have expressed their in-
tentions of buying high class auto-
mobiles.
One student who was in service, a
number of years thinks that he would
have earned enough to risk getting
married.

Bilooklyn Museum Man Makes Six
Months Expedition
New York, March 22.-Peru's coast-
al waters are teaming with enough
fish to feed the world, and her islands
are all veritable bird sanctuaries, ac-
cording to Robert Cushman Murphy,
curator of natural science of the
Brooklyn Museum, just returned from
six months' exploration in South Am-
erica with 500 photographs and 10,000
feet of motion picture film. Mr
Murphy said that on one island he
found "the most abundant seabird
life on earth," as many as 1,000,000
feathered creatures of a single spec-
ies.
The fisheries of Peru, he said, are
unorganized and, although fish are
plentiful, including such edible var'
ieties as the bonito, anchoveta, pejer-
rey or smelt, the congril (somewhat
like a cod), the flounder and corvena
(comparable to the Ameican salm-
on), Peruvians literally "go hungry"
because of their scarcity and high
price inland due to the problems of
icing and transportation.
. Current Effective
The "wonderful fish and bird life"
of Peru, Mr. Murphy attributed to the
Humboldt current, a cold body of
oceanic water which flows along 1,800
miles of the coast. He made many
observations of this current, he said,
following those of Alexander Agassiz
and Dr. Robert F. Coker of the United
States fish commission, pioneers in
such work. Although Peru's proxi-
mity to the equator, he said, would
cause one to suppose that it might
have a temperature like that of Fior-
ida, its actual temperature was more
like that of Boston.
Ar. Murphy called attention to the
guano or fertilizer deposits of Peru,
which, he said, may be doubled by
the conservation methods devised by
Francisco Ballen, a Peruvian, who he
described as "one of the most far-
sighted and able economists in the
FRESHMAN CUP DEBATE TEAM
CHOSEN BY ALPHA NU SOCIETY
Edward T. Ramsdell, '23, Raymond
P. Lewis, '23, and August A. Borsum,
'23, were selected last week to repre-
sent the Alpha Nu Dbating society in
the annual cup debate. These men
were chosen from a group of more
than 10 who tried out for places.
Jesse K. Brumbaugh, '23, was award-
ell the position of alternate.
Speakers discussed the question,

majority of those present voted to

tion,

world." In furtherance of Mr. Bal-
:en's plans, the explorer said, he ad-
vocated increasing the breeding arc a
of the guano producing birds, at pre-
sent confined to 15 islands.
Freight Competition Keen
Ocean freight rates, Mr. Murphy'
said, might be affected by the com-
petition which has sprung up since
the close of the war. Within the last
six months, he said, eight or nine
steamship lines-Dutch, French, Ital-
ian, British and American, are now
stopping at Peruvian ports.
Mr. Murphy, who is 34 years old and
a graduate of Brown university, is a
director of the Explorers' club. His-
expedition to Peru was aided financi-
ally by the American Museum of Na-
tural History and the American Geo-
graphical society.
Two Classes Unitc, to Buy Strikers.
An agreement has been made with
the class of 1919 by *the senior class
of 1920 at Ohio State to the effect that
it will combine its senior memorial
fees with those of the class of 1920
to buy strikers for the chimes in Or-
ton hall. The strikers will later be
used for the campanile to be erected
on ther campus. Funds on hand as
a result of this action amount to
$1,000.
Ohio Seniors Must Take Exams
A petition made by the senior class
of Ohio State asking that finals for
the graduating class be omitted, was
not granted by the faculty members.
It was also decided by the faculty
that beginning with next fall all new
students entering the university will
have to take examinations.
