W. Cowden spoke Tuesday evening to the members of Stylus on the topic, "Ghosts in Literature." In the short story, he said, there are two elements, love and fear, which ap- peal to the reader. Science, particu- larly psychology, has eliminated the old-fashioned ghost story, which pre- sented merely an unexplained mys- tery. This has given us the modern type, which, although it still appeals to the fundamental instinct of fear, attempts to explain all mysteries by theories such as those of the ultra-violet rays or of the fourth and fifth dimensions. Professor Cowden pointed out that 'the able writer holds much power in G his ability to produce fear in his read- ers. The next meeting of Stylus will be held at the Chi Omega house, on Tuesday, March 25.
