President-Elect
Ideal Executive
(Continued from Page One)
No Michigan man or woman under
the new regime will leave its halls
without more than a whetted desire
to be a mere getter for self andfrom
mankind. They will go forth with a
sense of their indebtedness to those
who by sacrifice and generosity have
created and maintained the great in-
stitution that has nurtured them
scholastically; to those who have toil-
ed and moiled in high and low degree
to make the state whqse chief pride
is the Universitytand its product; to
the patient, zealous faculty that
grinds out its life that glow and glory
may belong to others; to the Regents
who now and then are kicked in the.
manner I kicked them.
A Mortgage on Alumni
This consitiutes a moral mortgage
upon the lives of the alumni. They
can only discharge it by serving and
leading in the right pathway that
leads to justice in its broadest and
kindliest interpretatoin. Michigan
men and women will not fail those
who thus place them at the helms ,of
life.

Perhaps President Burton will work
to impose even a greater resposibil-
ity upon the University constituents.
I possess the opinion that the Presi-
dent should not only perside over but
should have a vote in the Regent
body; that the superintendent of pub-
lic instruction should also have a
vote, as well as a voice and the gov-
ernor of the state too; that the fac-
ulty, the student body and the alumni
should each be empowered to select-
a Regent. This brought might wise-
ly reduce the number of Regents
whose selection is purely political
and often of indirect interest.
Change in Methods Needed
Modern educational methods may
change the ancient system of judging
and standardizing students by me-
chanistic and mathematical examina-
tion. How often it is that men and
women thus picked become real fac-
tors in life while others rated highest
by these examinations spend them-
selves and fail to function potentially
after leaving college.
If the spirit and character. of a un-
iversity are what they should be no
student can spend four or six years
in the atmosphere this created, with-
out being thoroughly improved by
that and the attritional opportunities
and benefits that are presented. Some-
times there is not very much evid-
ence of this at once, because the in-
tellectual and spiritual values that
count most are not mycological in de-
velopment. With insistence upon de-
cency and character and application
there may not be need for much more.
Electivism Advocated
Electivism has only half play in
our universities today. I think it
should be permitted full expression
or none. There is as great need for
Americanization in education as.in cit-
izenship. The German system we have
copied makes for kultur and neoplat-
onism. .The coming American system
will seek to educate and heart first
and then the head.
All these things and many more
will have the earnest consideration of
President Burton in order that the
University of Michigan shall lead the
world into different and better paths.
Athletics Will Mean More
There is a story to the effect that
President Burton made his decision
to come to Michigan after witnessing
the indomitable spirit of loyalty and
sportsmanship that the Michigan men
and women showed upon the occasion
of the disastrous football game with
Minnesota. Good! Football scores
not all the measure there is of win-
ning or playing. American athletics
played a big part in winning the
World War. Under President Burton
they will mean in Michigan even more
than they have before and Michigan
is famous for its high sportsmanship.
Welcome! President Burton
So I welcome President Burton with
his big, clean body, his smile and
handshake, his eloquence of heart and
voice and his clarity of mind. And I
,congratulate Michigan, the Universi-
ty, the .d"Regents, America,
and also Pre e Burton.
Now for the homotve."'

The Upper Room Bible Class will
hold its regular meeting on Saturday
?evening at 7 o'clock at, 444 South
State street. Mr. Irving B.' Miller will
be the soloist. It is hoped that there
will be the usual large.attendance. It
is the busiest of times for students,
abut the leader of the class sometimes
says to its members, what he thinks
is the truth, that he does not see how
,they can get through the strenous pro-

the highest credit to themselves, with-
