George S. Hodges, exL,19, has been
awarded the new distinguished serv-,
ice medal of the navy for "exception-
ally meritorious service to th@ gov-
ernment in a duty of great responsi-
bility."
Hodges was an ensign in the naval
aviation. While flying at an English
naval air station, he saw la plane fall
in the water and catch fire. Landing
on the water, he dove from his cock-
pit, swam under the zone ,of burning
oil which surrounded the Saming
plane, and succeeded in saving two
men. For this deed he was recom-
mended for the new medal by Ad-
miral Sims.
The medal awarded:-him was also
given to 143 others, among whom
were Admirals Sims and Mayo, Vice-
Admirals Cleaves and :WlsoR ear
Admirals Benson, Coontz, Fetcher,
Rodman, Knight, Niblack; and Plun-
ket, and Major Generals Lejeune and
Barnett of the Marine corps. This is
the first time the .medal ..has been 1
awarded, it having been authorized by
act of congress last Feb. 4.
